A semiconductor photodetector () for detecting short duration laser light pulses of predetermined wavelength in a light signal () comprises a micro-resonator () of vertical Fabry-Perot construction having a Bragg mirror pair, namely, a front mirror () and a rear mirror () with an active region () located between the front and rear mirrors (). An N-type substrate () supports the rear mirror (). The light signal () is directed into the active region () through the front mirror () while a pump beam () is directed into the active region () at an end () thereof. The spacing between the front and rear mirrors () is such as to cause light of the predetermined wavelength to resonate between the mirrors (). The semiconductor material of the active region () is selected so that one photon from each of the light signal () and the pump beam () are required to transfer one electron from a valence band () of the active region () across a bandgap () to a conduction band () so that the active region operates on the principle of Two-Photon Absorption. On the active region () being simultaneously subjected to the pump beam and light of the predetermined wavelength in the light signal () electrons are transferred by Two-Photon Absorption from the valence band () to the conduction band (), thus causing a change in the voltage developed across the active region (). The change in voltage is detected between an electrode () on the substrate () and electrodes () on the front mirror () thereby indicating the presence of light of the predetermined wavelength in the light signal ().

A CD case has a drawer which may be pulled out by a handle for access to a CD. The drawer can be easily inserted during production, and multiple drawers can be stacked in stable manner. A front wall engages in a groove in a drawer stacked on top of it to provide stability. A CD is retained in a seat by a retainer having opposed gripping retainer elements. A CD is released by a user pressing a button, causing arm branches to pull together because of configuration of a resilient anchorage.

Case for a disc-like article

A DVD case () is of integral one-part moulded plastics construction. A retainer () has two opposed retainer parts () having lips () for engagement of a DVD at opposed sides of its central aperture. The DVD is released by the parts () being moved closer together. However there is no need for the user to press them directly. He or she simply presses a push-button () at the edge of the seat, causing the parts () to move together in a simple action caused by an integrally moulded release mechanism ().

Case for holding a disc-shaped article

A case stores CDs in a drawer which slides out from between an upper cover and a lower cover. The drawer has a handle projecting forwardly from the covers and which can be easily gripped by a user. A CD retainer in the drawer has a lip which grips a CD by snap-fitting over a side edge of the central aperture of the CD. The grip is released by the user simply pressing a push button, causing longitudinal movement of the retainer because it is on an arm extending between the button and a resilient anchorage.
