A single charge pyrotechnic material comprising a metal fuel, an oxidizer and a secondary fuel which can be used to control the rate of reaction of the pyrotechnic. The composition can be used as a single charge igniter in an automotive air bag system in place of the separate ignition charge and enhancer charge currently utilized.

The present invention is directed to an improved igniter for airbags wherein the igniter is combined with an airbag assembly fixedly making metal-to-metal communication.

Airbag igniter and method of manufacture

An impact sensitive high temperature detonator is disclosed. The detonator comprises an initiator charge of lead azide next to a thin casing wall at the input end, and a mass of finely divided refractory material adjacent to the initiator charge. The detonator can be initiated by a rounded firing pin, which indents the casing wall without puncturing it. In the event of misfire, the casing will remain intact, which facilitates safe removal of the detonator.

Impact sensitive high temperature detonator

Explosively activated delay device having a squib, a delay charge spaced therefrom, an output explosive charge, and thin metallic transfer disc between the delay charge and the output charge. The improvement in this invention is the provision of a dimpled transfer disc having an inwardly curved central portion in place of a flat transfer disc. A major advantage of the new construction is better heat transfer to the output charge, with consequent greater reliability in firing.
