Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for evaluating the utilization of communications features. In one aspect, a method includes identifying, for a particular organization, a set of communications features that are included in a communications service that is provided to the particular organization. Usage levels of communications features by members of the organization are determined. Based on the usage levels a determination is made that the at least one of the communications features is being underutilized. An updated set of communications features that removes the at least one of the communications features from the communications service that is provided to the particular organization is selected. Data that changes the set of communications features provided to the particular organization based, at least in part on the updated set of communications features are generated.

Evaluating communications feature utilization

A network media gateway is used to bridge trust between a Service Provider network and subscriber devices. The gateway is authenticated by the Service Provider by using knowledge of network topology. Subscriber devices are authenticated in response to subscriber input to the gateway via an interface. Trusted subscriber devices can be tightly coupled with the Service Provider network, thereby facilitating delivery of QoE. Mobile and remote subscriber devices may also be authenticated. The gateway may also facilitate establishment of VPNs for peer-to-peer communications, and dynamically adjustable traffic, policy and queue weightings based on usage patterns.

Security bridging

Network entity, method and computer-readable storage medium for use in a network that includes an arrangement of cell sites, each cell site configured to provide wireless services within a respective coverage region. The network entity may include an input configured to receive position information regarding occurrence of an event at an event site, and a processing entity configured to determine, based on the position information regarding occurrence of the event and policy information regarding the network, whether the event warrants coverage region reconfiguration and, if so, to generate a message commanding an adjustment to the coverage region of at least one cell site. An output is configured to release the message towards the at least one cell site, whereby application of the adjustment to the coverage region of the at least one cell site enables an increase in traffic to be accommodated in a vicinity of the event site.

Methods and systems for increasing wireless traffic capacity in the vicinity of an event site

Network entity, method and computer-readable storage medium for use in a network that includes an arrangement of cell sites, each cell site being configured to provide wireless services to users within a respective coverage region. The network entity comprises an input configured to receive position information regarding occurrence of an event at an event site, and a processing entity configured to determine on a basis of the position information regarding occurrence of the event and policy information regarding the network, whether the event warrants coverage region reconfiguration and, if so, to generate a message commanding an adjustment to the coverage region of at least one cell site. The present invention relates to a system and method for providing power management to sensing nodes in a sensor network. A system may include a plurality of sensing nodes, each sensing node connected through a power management device to an external power source, such as a powered node of another network, for managing power from the external power source to the sensing node. Beneficially, a plurality of power management devices allow for a sensor network of fixed or mobile wireless sensing nodes or sensor gateways to make use of power from an external source such as an another network e.g. an existing emergency lighting system or other similar powered building system. Thus for example, a sensor or group of sensing nodes and their associated power management devices may be integral with or co-located in proximity to powered nodes of these other networks. An intelligent power management device connected to at least one of the sensing nodes may provide for power policy management to sensing nodes based on monitoring power conditions such as available power, power level status, and information obtained from the sensing nodes indicative of network conditions, detecting a change therein, and regulating power to the sensing node depending on the change.

System and method for providing power management in a sensor network

A system for more optimally providing a service, such as a communications service, in an institutional setting by use of smart context-aware approaches. The system comprises an environmental context processing engine configured to transform sensed data indicative of activity relevant to provision of said service into data indicative of an environmental context in which said activity is deemed to have occurred; a situational context processing engine configured to transform the data indicative of the environmental context into data indicative of a situational context in which said activity is deemed to have occurred; and a decision making engine configured to apply data indicative of an institutional context to the data indicative of the situational context in order to determine an action to be taken in accordance with provision of said service.

Methods and systems for use in the provision of services in an institutional setting such as a healthcare facility

A communications network for a metropolitan area is disclosed. The network is comprised of three basic types of nodes: an access multiplexer, a photonic switch, and a core node. The access multiplexer provides multiplexing of data packets from end-users onto at least one sparse wavelength division multiplexed (SWDM) wavelength. The SWDM wavelengths are carried over fiber cable to the photonic switches, which consolidate these wavelengths into dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) wavelengths for transmission to the core node. The core nodes include a photonic switch (PSX) and a service-aware terabit router core for routing packets within the metropolitan area via the network or out to a long haul network. The photonic switches and core nodes are capable of switching at the wavelength, group of wavelength, and fiber levels.

Communications network for a metropolitan area

A network device such as a combination ONU-DSLAM deployed outside the central office includes a wireless transceiver to enable a technician to interface with the network device over a wireless control channel. This allows the technician to monitor, interrogate, and control the network device to ascertain performance of the network or the network device and cause the network device to perform particular desired operations. Additionally, providing a wireless interface enables the network technician to fix specific perceived problems in the network device, such as by uploading new software to the network device, to enable the network device to have increased functionality or more reliable performance. Infra-red, wireless, powerline, or another technology may be used to interface with the network device. The wireless access port may also enable subscribers to access the network, for example by causing the network device to act as an 802.11 hot spot.

A data processing apparatus comprises a memory store; a data bus connected to the memory store, the data bus being adapted for transporting data to and from the memory store; a processing entity operative to release read and write commands towards the memory store, the write command being accompanied by first data intended to be written to the memory store; and an encryption module communicatively coupled to the processing entity and to the data bus. Upon the processing entity releasing a write command accompanied by said first data, the encryption module encrypts, in accordance with an encryption key, said first data and send an encrypted version of said first data onto the data bus for writing into the memory store. The reverse operation is performed upon the processing entity releasing a read command.

Systems and methods for preserving confidentiality of sensitive information in a point-of-care communications environment

A system comprising a switching entity disposed between healthcare data processing resources and non-healthcare data processing resources. The switching entity is capable of operation in a first state in which an end user device is communicatively coupled to the healthcare data processing resources to support a healthcare session and a second state in which the end user device is communicatively coupled to the non-healthcare data processing resources to support a non-healthcare session. If the authentication request message is received while the switching entity is operating in the second state and a particular non-healthcare session is in progress, and the selected authentication entity is the healthcare authentication entity, initiating a memory purge at the end user device. Attacks on the healthcare data processing resources, both from the non-healthcare resources directly and via the end user device, are thus prevented.

Systems and methods for preventing an attack on healthcare data processing resources in a hospital information system

The present invention delivers both voice and real-time communications over telephony infrastructure. The telephony infrastructure will effectively couple a DSL server in a local telephony exchange to telephony terminals and DSL modems at any number of user locations. Each DSL modem will be coupled to a computing device, such as a personal computer, that is capable of facilitating real-time communications. The DSL server is directly or indirectly coupled to a packet network. In addition to being coupled to the DSL server, telephony cabling at the local telephony exchange is also coupled to a telephony switch to support circuit-switched voice communications. As such, circuit-switched voice sessions may be established via the telephony switch with the telephony terminal over the same telephony cabling. Real-time communications may be provided over the telephony cabling using DSL service between the DSL modem and the DSL server.

Using DSL services to facilitate real-time communications in enterprise networks

Method and apparatus for stabilizing an optical carrier frequency of a generated carrier signal with respect to a target carrier frequency. The apparatus includes a multi-channel optical filter for filtering the generated carrier signal, thereby to provide a first filtered optical signal and a second filtered optical signal, each filtered optical signal including the portion of the generated carrier signal contained in a pass band surrounding a respective channel center frequency. The apparatus also includes a detection unit for determining an indication of a characteristic of the target carrier frequency in the first and second filtered optical signals, as well as a control unit for adjusting the optical carrier frequency of the generated carrier signal as a function of the difference in the indication of the characteristic of the target carrier frequency in the first and second filtered optical signals.

A photonic switch uses a cost-effective DWDM optimized switch architecture allowing the introduction of DWDM into the metro network. In order to implement this architecture cost-effective ways of implementing the optical carrier frequency/wavelength precision required for a Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing 100 GHz or 50 GHz on-grid solutions are needed. The photonic switch acts as an intermediary between the WDM density of the access portion of the metropolitan photonic network and the DWDM density of the core photonic network. The metro photonic switch introduces optical carriers that are all generated in the photonic layer adjacent to it and allocates them out to the photonic access nodes for modulation. This has the advantage of providing the optical carriers to be modulated from a centralized highly stable and precise source, thereby meeting the requirements for DWDM carrier precision, whilst generating these carriers in relatively close proximity to the modulators. Coarse WDM components can be used in the access portion of the network without adversely affecting the ability of the signal to transit the DWDM portion of the core network, since the optical carrier frequency is fixed at the centralized source and is unaffected by these components.

Metropolitan photonic switch

The photonic network of the present invention uses a cost-effective DWDM optimized switch architecture allowing the introduction of DWDM into the metro network. In this invention the optical carriers are all generated in the photonic layer at the edge photonic switching node and are allocated out to the photonic access nodes or central core data switch for modulation. This has the advantage of providing the optical carriers to be modulated from a centralized highly stable and precise source, thereby meeting the requirements for DWDM carrier precision, whilst generating these carriers in relatively close proximity to the modulators. Sparse WDM components can be used in the access portion of the network without adversely affecting the ability of the signal to transit the DWDM portion of the core network, since the optical carrier frequency is fixed at the centralized source and is unaffected by these components.
