In some embodiments, an electric field generator generates an electric field at a nominal frequency. A detector measures, at multiple time points during a measuring period, one or more properties of the generated electric field. In various embodiments, the one or more properties of the electric field change over time due to interactions with a human body in a reactive near-field region of the electric field. From the measured one or more properties, a computation unit determines one or more periodic behaviors (such as a respiration or heartbeat) and one or more non-periodic behaviors (such as movement of a limb). The computation unit also computes, from at least one of the periodic and non-periodic behaviors, one or more physiological parameters of the human body. From the one or more physiological parameters, the computation unit detects one or more symptoms of a condition of the human body.

In some embodiments, an electric field generator generates an electric field at a nominal frequency and a nominal amplitude. The electric field generator is connected to an antenna that radiates the electric field. A detector measures a frequency and an amplitude of the generated electric field as the electric field interacts with a body (such as a human body) in a reactive near-field region of the electric field. For each of one or more internal components of the body, a computation unit determines a respective periodic behavior in the measured frequency corresponding to movement of the internal component. The computation unit also computes, for each of the one or more internal components, a respective rate of the movement of the internal component based on the determined respective periodic behavior in the measured frequency. A gain control circuit adjusts the nominal amplitude according to the measured amplitude.

In some embodiments, an electric field generator includes a differential oscillator that oscillates at a nominal frequency. The electric field generator is connected to a differential antenna that radiates an electric field. A differential detector measures a frequency of the generated electric field as the electric field interacts with a body (such as a human body) in a reactive near-field region of the electric field. For each of one or more internal components of the body, a computation unit determines a respective periodic behavior in the measured frequency indicative of movement of the internal component. The computation unit also computes, for each of the one or more internal components of the body, a respective rate of movement (such as a heart rate or a respiration rate) of the internal component according to the respective periodic behavior in the measured frequency.

A portable electrical stimulation device is disclosed. In one aspect, the device includes a pair of electrodes configured to be electrically coupled to a user and a wave generator configured to provide an electrical signal to the user via the pair of electrodes. The wave generator is further configured to generate the electrical signal at one of a plurality of levels. Each of the plurality of levels is defined by at least a frequency, a peak voltage, and a peak current. For each of the levels the frequency is in a range of about 50 Hz-about 500 Hz, the peak voltage is in a range of about 40 V-about 250 V, the peak current is in a range of about 25 mA-about 150 mA, and the frequency and the peak voltage have a generally inverse relationship.

Methods and systems for monitoring the well-being of a target are disclosed. In a method embodiment, data representing a signal is received by a computer system. The signal may be generated at least in part by one or more sensors in response to the detection of a change in an electrical field, electric potential, capacitance, and/or dielectric constant of a target spaced apart from the one or more sensors. The method may further include identifying, using the computer system and based at least in part on the data electronically received by the computer system, a recurring pattern in the received data. The method may also include determining, using the computer system and based at least in part on the received data, whether a deviation from the recurring pattern transgresses a threshold. The deviation may comprise a subset of the data electronically received by the computer system.

Systems and methods for monitoring vital signs based on sensed changes in a target

Apparatuses, methods, and systems for tracking movements of golf clubs and alerting a golfer when one or more golf clubs are misplaced from a group of golf clubs. A peripheral unit is associated with and affixed to each of a number of golf clubs, and transmits signals that are detected and collectively processed by a base unit to determine the status of those clubs. A club may be designated as misplaced based on the sequence and timing of status events, upon which an alarm is activated to alert the golfer. Also the base unit may process signals regarding movement of golf clubs in conjunction with location data from a Global Positioning System device to obtain information regarding the user's golf performance.

Methods and systems for monitoring a well-being of a target are disclosed. In a method embodiment, data representing a process electric potential signal is received by a computer system. The process electric potential signal may be generated at least in part by one or more electric potential sensors in response to the detection of a change in an electric field of a target spaced apart from the one or more electric potential sensors. The method may further include identifying, using the computer system and based at least in part on the data electronically received by the computer system, a recurring pattern in the received data. The method may also include determining, using the computer system and based at least in part on the received data, whether a deviation from the recurring pattern transgresses a threshold. The deviation may comprise a subset of the data electronically received by the computer system.

Apparatus for capturing, aggregating, and transferring data to detect windshield wiper motion in a motor vehicle so as to alert the driver of the need to turn on headlights. The apparatus includes motion-sensing hardware having a microprocessor programmed to detect rhythmic movement of shadows at regular intervals or to receive digitized signals from inertial sensors and to sense rhythmic patterns of vibration or motion in the car and characterize and filter the patterns to accurately distinguish wiper motions from other motions. The software then instructs the microprocessor to output a perceivable alert to the driver indicating that vehicle lights must be turned on.

A two-dimensional matrix code, method of producing the code and a method and device for reading the code are presented. The code is a round, compact and distinct code that stores an error-corrected 64-bit number, embedded targets, and quality control information within a space small enough for imaging using a compact, hand-held code finder. The code incorporates white space both between the data areas and targets for easy identification of the code and to aid in image processing, and within the data area to correct for errors that sometimes occur when printing using low-quality techniques. Additionally, the code includes features to correct for other printing errors, such as variations in printing press speed and intentional aspect ratio stretching to fill copy space. The code is thus robust enough to be incorporated within newsprint and is also easily imaged using specially constructed code finders. A code finder device and a method of using the finder for acquiring a code of the present invention is also presented. The finder is portable and easy to use, requiring no rotational orientation for correct acquisition. Several embodiments are described, in which the finder contains illumination and communications electronics and means to notify the user of correct operation of the finder.
