Yarn hairiness is reduced by employing a vortex action of a fluid, such as air or steam. Yarn in a substantially dry condition is passed in a generally linear path through a body having a central through-extending generally linear passageway that is circular in cross-section. A plurality of bores are provided in the body which extend from the periphery of the body to intersect the central passageway, being tangentially disposed with respect to the central passageway. Fluid under pressure is introduced into the bores, and creates a vortex action which acts upon the yarn to twist and lay down protruding hairs that cause yarn hairiness. The bores are preferably disposed at an angle of about 40.degree.-50.degree. with respect to the central passageway, and are spaced along the length of the passageway. Shortly after the yarn exits the body, hot melt sizing is applied to it to maintain the protruding hairs in their laid down position.

A noise control system for reducing the noise level emanating from an air jet spinning machine includes an acoustical door for covering a jet chamber which contains the air jets. The door is automatically opened whenever a yarn suction tube is to be inserted into the jet chamber for a threading-up operation.

A structure for weaving without outer leno yarns on an air jet loom eliminates the auxiliary selvage from both sides of the fabric being woven. A mechanical filling yarn clamp is disposed between the filling detector and suction source on the right-hand side of the loom for holding the ends of the picks during weaving. A suction source nozzle is mounted adjacent and exterior of a fringe cutter downstream of the temples on the right-hand side for removing pick trimmings cut by the fringe cutter. A combined clamp and cutter is mounted on the left-hand side of the loom adjacent the fabric edge to provide acceptable fringe length without subsequent trimming.

A method and apparatus for open-end spinning of novelty yarn produces novelty yarns in a simple manner. A sliver is fed to the fiber separating device of an open-end spinning apparatus to form distinct fibers, the fibers are air transported in a fiber flow path to the twisting device, controlled formation of effects (particularly slubs) is effected during air transport of the distinct fibers in their path, the formed effects are intermittently passed to the twisting device (e.g. pseudo-randomly), the fibers fed to the twisting device are twisted into a continuous strand of effect yarn (particularly slub yarn), and the continuous strand of effect yarn is taken up. The controlled formation of effects may be accomplished in a number of manners: introducing a needle making an angle of 25.degree.-45.degree. with respect to the direction of fiber flow into the fiber flow path in the transport section; pivoting an elongated member about an axis perpendicular to the direction of fiber flow so that a free end thereof engages, or substantially engages, a wall of the transport section to collect fibers; or by pivoting an elongated member about an axis skew with respect to the direction of fiber flow, into contact, or substantial contact, with a wall of the transport section.

The controlled formation of effects is preferably accomplished by introducing a needle into the fiber flow path in the transport section, the fibers collecting on the needle. The fibers are passed to the twisting device by withdrawing the needle from the fiber flow. Virtually any type of conventional open-end spinning apparatus may be modified to practice the slub yarn spinning according to the invention.
