A process for producing an aqueous hypochlorous acid solution reacts droplets of an alkali metal hydroxide solution containing greater than 50 percent by weight of the alkali metal hydroxide with chlorine gas. The reaction produces a gaseous mixture of dichlorine monoxide, chlorine, hypochlorous acid vapor and water vapor, and solid particles of alkali metal chloride. The solid particles of alkali metal chloride are separated and the gaseous mixture condensed at a temperature in the range of from about -33.degree. C. and about -5.degree. C. to produce the aqueous hypochlorous acid solution. The process of the invention results in increased yields of hypochlorous acid and provides an economic basis for increased production capacity. The aqueous hypochlorous acid solutions produced are highly pure and as a result have significantly improved stability.

Process for producing concentrated hypochlorous acid solutions

An elongated, generally vertically extending cocurrent reactor vessel for the production of hypochlorous acid by the mixing and reaction of a liquid alkali metal hydroxide and a gaseous halogen is provided wherein an atomizer is mounted near the top of the reactor vessel to atomize the liquid alkali metal hydroxide into droplets in the vessel. The vessel has a spraying and reaction zone immediately beneath the atomizer and a drying zone beneath the spraying and reaction zone to produce a gaseous hypochlorous acid and a substantially dry solid salt by-product.

A process for producing a chloroisocyanuric acid compound which comprises reacting cyanuric acid with a chlorinating agent consisting of an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid substantially free of ionic impurities having a pH of less than about 2. The process produces chloroisocyanuric acid compounds with reduced volumes of effluent solutions and significantly reduced amounts of gas released during operation. The novel process for producing chloroisocyanuric acid compounds can employ solid forms of cyanuric acid as a reactant.

An elongated, generally vertically extending cocurrent reactor vessel for the production of hypochlorous acid by the mixing and reaction of a liquid alkali metal hydroxide and a gaseous halogen is provided wherein a nozzle is mounted near the top of the reactor vessel beneath the gas injector to spray the liquid alkali metal hydroxide in droplets so that the halogen gas can be absorbed into the surface of the droplets simultaneously with water evaporation in the vessel. The vessel has a spraying and reaction zone immediately beneath the atomizer and a drying zone beneath the spraying and reaction zone.

Gas injector for hypochlorous acid reactor

A process and apparatus utilizing the process of the present invention are provided to produce a fast dissolving, thermally sensitive granular product. The process employs a fluidized spray dryer having a fluidized bed of granular particles into which recycled off-sized product is fed after being agglomerated to adjust particle size. The spray dryer optionally can employ a second nozzle positioned above the fluidized bed. The process can be employed in the production of calcium hypochlorite water sanitizing chemical wherein the chlorine is supplied from a hypochlorous acid reactor and lime hypochlorinator.

Method of producing a hypohalogenated acid

A calcium hypochlorite composition consists essentially of at least 75 percent by weight of Ca(OCl).sub.2, from about 6 to about 14 percent by weight of water, and less than 1.5 percent by weight of an alkali metal chloride. The novel composition provides increased amounts of sanitizing and disinfecting to, for example, water bodies while remaining safe with respect to thermal decomposition. Further, the composition reduces the rate of chlorine evolution during storage.

Calcium hypochlorite product

A process for producing hypochlorous acid by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in droplet form with gaseous chlorine to produce hypochlorous acid vapor and solid alkali metal chloride particles in which the improvement comprises employing molar ratios of gaseous chlorine to the alkali metal hydroxide of at least about 22:1. The process achieves high yields of hypochlorous acid by minimizing side reactions including the formation of chlorate as an impurity in the alkali metal chloride particles produced. The hypochlorous acid solution produced contains from about 35 to about 60 percent by weight of HOCl, a dissolved chlorine concentration of less than about 2 percent by weight, and is substantially free of alkali metal ions and chloride ions.

Hypochlorous acid process

A process for producing calcium hypochlorite comprises wetting lime with an aqueous slurry of fine basic calcium hypochlorite crystals in a mixing zone to form an aqueous lime slurry. The aqueous lime slurry is reacted with a calcium hypochlorite solution in a crystallizing zone to produce a slurry of basic calcium hypochlorite crystals. The slurry of basic calcium hypochlorite crystals is separated in a first separation means into a slurry of fine basic calcium hypochlorite crystals and a slurry of coarse basic calcium hypochlorite crystals. The slurry of fine basic calcium hypochlorite crystals is returned to said mixing zone. The slurry of coarse basic calcium hypochlorite is conveyed to a second separation means to separate coarse crystals of basic calcium hypochlorite from a calcium hypochlorite mother liquor. Coarse crystals of basic calcium hypochlorite are admixed with lime and an alkali metal hypochlorite in a third mixing zone to form a mixed alkali slurry. The mixed alkali slurry is reacted with chlorine to form a paste of calcium hypochlorite dihydrate which is separated into a cake of calcium hypochlorite dihydrate and a paste liquor. The paste liquor is fed to the crystallizing zone. The cake of calcium hypochlorite dihydrate is dried to produce granular calcium hypochlorite. The novel process of the present invention produces crystalline basic calcium hypochlorite slurries having high filtration rates. In addition, the process provides improved crystal growth control and effectively prevents excess nucleation in the crystallization of the basic calcium hypochlorite.

Process for calcium hypochlorite

A novel process for the production of granular calcium hypochlorite compositions is provided which comprises reacting neutral calcium hypochlorite with an alkaline solution comprised of an alkali metal hypochlorite and an alkali metal hydroxide. The reaction produces a slurry from which a wet cake comprised of neutral calcium hypochlorite and a residual amount of hemibasic calcium hypochlorite is recovered and dried. During the drying process in which granular calcium hypochlorite compositions are obtained, there is a substantial reduction in the loss of available chlorine from the product.
