The invention provides the use in combating fungi of compounds of general formula I wherein R is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyl, acyloxy, optionally substituted amino, R , R Si, R S or R O, where R is optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted alkynyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkenyl, optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted heterocyclyl; Z is oxygen or sulfur; M is a thiophene ring; and R and R , which may be the same or different, have the same meaning as R or can be optionally substituted amino, hydrogen, halogen, cyano, nitro or a group OR or S(O) R , where R has the same meaning as R or is hydrogen or acyl and m is 0, 1 or 2; or R and R together with the atoms to which they are attached form an optionally substituted carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring; together with tautomers of compounds where R is hydrogen.

Fungicides

The invention provides the use in combating fungi of compounds of general formula (I) wherein R is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyl, acyloxy, optionally substituted amino, R , R Si, R S or R O, where R is optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted alkynyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkenyl, optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted heterocyclyl; R has the same meaning as R or can be hydrogen; Z is oxygen or sulfur, M is a thiophene ring, and R and R , which may be the same or different, have the same meaning as R or can be optionally substituted amino, hydrogen, halogen, cyano, nitro or a group OR or S(O) R , where R has the same meaning as R or is hydrogen or acyl and m is 0, 1 or 2; or R and R together with the atoms to which they are attached form an optionally substituted carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring; together with tautomers of compounds where R is hydrogen.

Compounds of formula I ##STR1## in which X and R.sup.1-4 have the meanings given in the description, have activity against phytopathogenic fungi.

Imidazole fungicides

The invention provides compounds of formula I ##STR1## in which X, Y and R.sup.1-5 are as defined in the description. The compounds have valuable fungicidal activity.

Azole fungicides

Compounds of formula I ##STR1## where A is OH, B is H, C.sub.1-4 alkyl optionally substituted by C.sub.1-4 alkoxy carbonyl, C.sub.2-4 alkenyl, CONR.sub.2 or COR.sub.4 R.sub.1 is H, R.sub.2 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl, and R.sub.4 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or phenyl, optionally substituted by carboxy have pesticidal and especially fungicidal activity. Many of the compounds are novel and these compounds per se, form part of the invention.

5-fluoroanthranilic fungicides

The invention provides compounds of formula I ##STR1## in which X, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are as defined in the description. The compounds have valuable fungicidal activity.

Imidazable fungicides and use thereof

Compounds of any one of formulae I-VII ##STR1## where is a single or double bond;

Compounds are disclosed having fungicidal activity and are of general formula I ##STR1## where at least three of A, C, D and E are --CX.dbd. and the other is --CX.dbd. or --N.dbd., where X is hydrogen, C.sub.1-8 -alkyl (optionally substituted by halogen), halo, nitro or phenoxy, in which the phenyl is optionally substituted by one or more groups selected from halo and trifluoromethyl;

Bicyclic fungicides

Compounds of any of one of formulae I-VII ##STR1## where  is a single or double bond;

The compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents phenyl substituted in at least the 2-position by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine, R.sup.2 represents a group R.sup.3, --OR.sup.3, --SR.sup.3 or --NR.sup.3 R.sup.4 where R.sup.3 represents hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 3 to 7 carbon atoms, alkenyl of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkenyl of 3 to 7 carbon atoms, alkynyl of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, phenyl, phenylalkyl of 7 to 10 carbon atoms or naphthyl, each of which may be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogen atoms, alkyl or alkoxy or alkylthio groups of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, nitro groups, cyano groups or mercapto groups, R.sup.4 represents a group as defined for R.sup.3 but not necessarily identical thereto, and A and B, together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, form a 3,6-disubstituted pyridazine, a 3,6-disubstituted dihydropyridazine, a 2,5-disubstituted pyrimidine, a 1,2,4-oxadiazole, a 1,2,4-oxadiazoline or a 1,2,4-triazole ring, and the quaternary salts thereof, are novel compounds which are pesticidal, notably with respect to acarids, insects and aphids and their eggs and larvae. Compositions containing the compounds are also described as well as processes for their preparation and methods of using them.

Pesticidal 1,2,4-triazole compounds

The substituted tetrazines of the formula: ##STR1## and of the formula: ##STR2## wherein: R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 each represent hydrogen, phenyl, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or alkenyl or alkynyl of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, each of which may be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogen atoms, hydroxy groups, cyano groups, carboxy groups, alkoxycarbonyl groups of 2 to 5 carbon atoms, or alkoxy groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together represent a single bond; R.sup.3 represents alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 3 to 7 carbon atoms, phenyl or phenylalkyl of 7 to 10 carbon atoms, each of which may be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogen atoms, alkyl or alkoxy groups of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, nitro groups, cyano groups, mercapto groups, or alkylmercapto groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R.sup.6 represents a phenyl group substituted in at least the 2-position by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine; are effective to combat acarids and their eggs.

1,2,4,5-Tetrazines

There are provided the compounds of the formula: ##STR1## (wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, a nitro group, a cyano group or a halogen atom, R.sup.5 represents a quaternized nitrogen-containing heterocyclyl radical linked via a ring carbon atom, X represents one equivalent of an anion, R.sup.7 represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group or a substituted or unsubstituted, saturated or unsaturated heterocyclyl group which, if nitrogen-containing, is quaternized, linked via a ring carbon atom, and R.sup.6 either represents an alkyl group or, when R.sup.7 represents a quaternized nitrogen-containing heterocyclyl group, and the quaternized nitrogen atom is ortho to the linked ring carbon atom, may represent a methylene, dimethylene, trimethylene or alkyl-substituted ethenylene chain to that nitrogen atom. The compounds are selective herbicides.

Compounds of formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are the same or different and each represents hydrogen, halogen, nitro, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkoxy, carboxy or an ester, amide or mono- or di-substituted amide thereof, aryl, heterocyclic, aralkyl, cyano or hydroxy, with the proviso that R.sup.3 does not represent a second group of formula I or II in which R.sup.3 is merely a bond;
