Date Sept. 4, 1980 A system for shutting-down an engine upon overspeeding thereof comprises an engine-driven shaft (19) having a flyweight mechanism (27) connected thereto and engageable with a reciprocally mounted trip shaft (32). The trip shaft (32) is, in turn, engageable with a pivotal latch (33) which is adapted to normally hold a spring-loaded control piston (44) in an inactive first position for permitting normal engine operation. A cable (12) connects the control piston (44) to a flapper valve (11), pivotally mounted in the intake manifold (13) of an engine. The manifold (13) is adapted to be closed upon tripping of the latch (33) to disengage the control piston (44) to permit its movement to an activated second position when the engine speed exceeds a predetermined maximum speed. Closing of the flapper valve (11) will create a vacuum in the intake manifold (13) which, in turn, opens a vacuum valve (14) mounted thereon to responsively move a rack (16) of a fuel control system (17) to a closed position to prevent communication of fuel to the engine.

Engine overspeed shut-down system

An improved fuel-air ratio control apparatus for a supercharged engine having a governor means connected to a fuel adjusting member and a supercharger for supplying air through an intake manifold is disclosed. The control apparatus is directly engageable with the fuel adjusting member and is responsive to intake manifold air pressure and engine oil pressure. The apparatus is inoperative to restrain the adjusting member during start-up of the engine and remains so until such time as a predetermined intake manifold pressure is attained, at which time the control apparatus moves to a position which permits the metering of engine oil therethrough to permit normal governor operation and proportional increases of fuel with air pressure increased. The control apparatus thereafter automatically limits the fuel supplied to the engine, and therefore engine torque rise, during a decrease in engine speed caused by loading on the engine to thereby limit any undesired exhaust smoke. The improvement relates to the amount of torque reduction available from two torque reducer springs, and to the new means for adjustment of the rate of torque reduction using jam nuts.

A fuel filtering system comprises a case having a cartridge-type filter disposed therein, along with a separator which defines a reservoir. Fuel, such as diesel fuel, is adapted to normally enter an inlet to the case, flow through the filter and thence to an outlet of the case for engine consumption purposes. A valve member, having a specific gravity less than water but greater than that of the fuel, is movably mounted adjacent to the outlet. When the level of water in the reservoir exceeds a predetermined level, the valve member will float on the water and move upwardly to at least partially close-off communication of fuel to the outlet to thus adversely affect engine performance whereby the vehicle operator is alerted to the water-in-fuel problem. In a first embodiment of this invention, such valve member comprises a tubular member mounted exteriorly on a tube defining the outlet therein whereas in a second such embodiment the valve member comprises a spherical ball movably mounted in the tubular member.
