An air cycle machine includes a turbine section, a compressor section, an axial flux magnetic gear system electromechanically coupling the turbine section to the compressor section, and a stabilization system for at least one shaft of the air cycle machine. The axial flux magnetic gear system includes a stator, two rotors, a winding system, and a control module. Each rotor interacts with the stator such that the rotor rotates when the axial flux magnetic gear system is exposed to an electrical current. The winding system stabilizes the position of the rotors along their rotational axes. The control module is configured to supply the electrical current to at least one of the winding system, the stator, and the rotors to drive rotation of the rotors. The stabilization system stabilizes the position of the at least one shaft of the air cycle machine along the shaft's rotational axis.

A turbine of an air cycle machine, having: a housing; an output shaft that spins about a spin axis; a turbine disposed on the output shaft; a first nozzle defining a first inlet area that directs a first flow into the housing, the first nozzle extending along a first axis that is disposed at a first meridional angle to the spin axis; a second nozzle defining a second inlet area that differs from the first inlet area, the second nozzle directs a second flow into the housing to provide a mixed flow within the housing, the second nozzle extending along a second axis that is disposed at a second meridional angle to the spin axis, the second meridional angle differing from the first meridional angle; and a control valve configured to open and close the second nozzle.

An environmental control system includes a rotary machine, a first bypass duct, and a first check valve in the first bypass duct. The rotary machine includes a compressor section and a first turbine section. Each section of the rotary machine includes an inlet, an outlet, a duct extending between the inlet and the outlet, and an impeller in the duct. The rotary machine also includes a tie rod mechanically connecting the compressor impeller and the first turbine impeller. The first bypass duct is between the compressor section and the first turbine inlet. The check valve opens the first bypass duct when an air pressure in the compressor inlet is higher than an air pressure in the first turbine inlet.

A system can include a compressor outlet line configured to receive compressor outlet flow from a compressor, a bypass line in fluid communication with the compressor outlet line and a motor outlet line to divert a bypass flow of the compressor outlet flow. The system can include at least one pump in fluid communication between the bypass line and the motor outlet line such that the bypass flow at least partially drives the pump to pull cooling flow through a motor to cool the motor.

A thrust plate includes an annular-shaped body having a scalloped outer edge that forms a first circumference defined by a first diameter. The thrust plate further includes a plurality of cooling slots formed in a first surface of the body. The cooling slots are formed between each pair of adjacent scallops. A center of each cooling slot extends towards the center of the thrust plate at a common predetermined angle with respect to one another.

A motor driven compressor apparatus includes a first stage compressor, a second stage compressor, an electric motor disposed between and coupled to the first stage compressor and the second stage compressor, thermal sensors disposed on the electric motor and configured to externally measure internal temperatures of the electric motor or internal bearings or components, and an external controller coupled to the electric motor and to the thermal sensors, and configured to at least one of slow down a speed of the electric motor and shut down the electric motor in response to at least one of an excess of a predetermined internal temperature and a rate of internal temperature change.

An air bearing shaft for an air cycle machine is provided. The air bearing shaft includes a seal disk and a shaft body. The shaft body includes a first shaft body portion extending from a face of the seal disk to a knife-edge seal. The first shaft body portion includes journal bearing cooling holes positioned axially closer to the knife-edge seal than to the face of the seal disk. The journal bearing cooling holes extend through the first shaft body portion to a hollow interior and have a total cooling area. Start-up holes are positioned axially closer to the face of the seal disk than to the knife-edge seal. The start-up holes extend through the first shaft body portion to the hollow interior. The start-up holes have a total start-up area. A ratio of the total cooling area to the total start-up area is between 2.17 and 4.06.
