A novel method is set out of preparation of radioactive diagnostic radiopharmaceutical in a stable, shippable, lyophilized form by an apparatus designed to rapidly flash freeze and dehydrate a radiopharmaceutical composition to minimize auto radiolysis. The method proposes rapid cooling and removal of ambient vapor, and then ultra cold removal when the potential of explosive liquid oxygen is eliminated. The radioactive diagnostic radiopharmaceutical requires no further cold or refrigerated storage, including with respect to shipping, subsequent to stabilization. The preferred composition can be reconstituted 'on site' by the addition of a suitable diluent to bring the radiopharmaceutical complex into solution at a desired concentration.

Stablilized and lyophilized radiopharmaceutical agents

A surface contaminated by a radioactive isotope is cleaned by applying to it a solution that contains an ion-specific resin that is weakly bonded to an ion and a weak anion solution including a carrier, water, and an ion that frees the radioactive isotope from the contaminated surface. The radioactive isotope bonds with the ion-specific resin, replacing the ion weakly bonded to said ion-specific resin. In a preferred embodiment, the ion-specific resin is made in the counterion form of citrate, the ion that is weakly bonded to the ion-specific resin is citrate, the carrier is glycerin, the water is de-ionized or distilled, and the ion that frees the radioactive isotope from the contaminated surface is salicylate.

Ion-specific radiodecontamination method and treatment for radiation patients

A sterile, absorbent, lint-free, soft, and at least slightly abrasive pad is impregnated with an anti-coagulant. The pad is packaged in a sterile pouch and the pouch is opened to apply the anti-coagulant to an intravenous device such as a catheter or stent device, to clean blood from a used needle or to decontaminate an operating room surface. The anti-coagulant is preferably heparin-benzalkonium chloride formulated in a solution of 1.5% heparin-benzalkonium chloride by weight or volume, containing 850 USP heparin units per milliliter in a solvent such as isopropyl alcohol.

Dosages of a radionuclide carrier for use in diagnostic nuclear medicine are prepared in separate, aliquot quantities by storing a discrete amount of a lyophilized radionuclide carrier material in tubular containers. The containers are closed to exclude moisture and air. The radionuclide carrier is reconstituted as an aliquot dosage by interposing the container between the needle and barrel of a hypodermic syringe, and drawing a predetermined amount of a reconstituting liquid into the syringe barrel through the needle and through the container. The liquid dissolves the lyophilized carrier to form an aliquot dosage for each patient, only as needed.
