The dual-chamber whistle is a sound producing device that creates a first air flow, a second air flow and a third air flow within the dual-chamber whistle. The basic sound of the dual-chamber whistle is generated by a first turbulence created the interaction of the first air flow and the second air flow. The third air flow also interacts with both the first air flow and the second air flow to create a second turbulence. This second turbulence creates an additional sound called the oversound. While actual patterns of turbulences created in both the first turbulence and the second turbulence are essentially random, the human psychological response to the oversound is to interpret the oversound as an actual call for help. The dual-chamber whistle comprises an intake, an exhaust, and a router which creates a complex air flow.

A monitoring system uses infrared photoplethysmography to monitor the pulse of a person wearing a wrist unit, and the wrist unit sends RF signals which describe his heart condition to a base unit. If the wrist unit detects a cardiac arrest or if the wearer manually signals an emergency, both the wrist and the base units sound local alarms. The base unit also telephones others outside of the user's home to alert them to the emergency. The wrist unit is designed to be fail-safe and to prevent false alarms. When the wrist unit fails to detect a pulse, it makes several further attempts to detect a pulse before signalling a cardiac arrest emergency. A prioritization and output activation circuit activates wrist unit outputs, including audio signals, an RF signal transmitter, and a display, according to a predetermined priority when more than one condition requiring a response exists. RF signals sent by the wrist unit's RF signal transmitter are received by the base unit's antenna and processed to selectively activate an external display panel, two audio signal devices, and an auto dialer. The base unit also includes a removable, self-contained CPR instructions player which provides interactive real time directions for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

A vane type compact pump for use in a power steering system having a remote reservoir includes a substantially cylindrical housing with a central cylindrical cavity. The cavity has a large opening at one end of the housing and a shaft opening at the other end. A pressure plate, cam, rotor and vane assembly and a thrust plate are axially aligned and positioned in the cavity with the thrust plate being adjacent to and closing the large open end of the cavity. A locking ring engages the housing and limits the axial movement of the thrust plate toward the large open end. A drive shaft is rotatably supported in a bearing in the housing and in a bearing in the thrust plate. The drive shaft is drivingly connected with the rotor intermediate the bearing supports. The fluid discharge from the cam rotor and vane assembly passes through the pressure plate to a space intermediate the pressure plate and housing and then through a flow controlling system which permits a predetermined volume of hydraulic fluid to be delivered to the power steering system. The remaining fluid is redirected to the cylindrical cavity. On its return to the cylindrical cavity, the redirected fluid passes through a portion of an inlet port from which make-up oil is aspirated from the reservoir and a supercharge pressure is established in the cylindrical cavity.

The piston nut of this compact steering gear telescopes over the valve assembly and into an adjuster plug at opposite ends of its stroke to provide for a foreshortened gear housing. The piston nut screw is connected to the valve assembly and the input stub shaft by a special retainer means to prevent their axial separation to maintain the integrity of the mechanical drive of the piston nut. The adjuster plug provides a thrust bearing adjustment, a closure for the gear and a travel stop for the piston nut when telescoping therein. The stepped bore in the housing provides for improved assembly of the parts from one end of the housing through the opening for the adjuster plug.
