Derivatives of p-menthane are disclosed having the property of stimulating the cold receptors of the nervous system of the human body to produce a cold sensation and are used for this purpose in a variety of edible and topical preparations.

Compositions having a physiological cooling effect

According to the invention physiological cooling activity is imparted to tobacco and tobacco-containing manufactures, e.g. pipe tobacco and cigarettes by incorporating therein certain cold receptor stimulating derivatives of p-menthane, viz: p-menthane-3-carboxylic acid, its salts and certain esters thereof, and p-menthane-3-carboxamide.

Tobacco and tobacco-containing manufactures containing an ingredient

Compounds are disclosed having a physiological cooling action on the skin. The compositions contain, as the effective ingredient, certain esters of p-menthane 3-carboxylic acid.
