In a rotatable magnetron, a seal cartridge having vacuum seals integrated therein provides a seal between a seal housing of the magnetron support assembly and a spindle carried therein. The seal cartridge is axially movable with respect to the magnetron support assembly which enables its efficient removal and replacement therefrom. As such removal and replacement of the cartridge automatically accomplishes the removal and replacement of the integral vacuum seals, no handling or reassembly of the vacuum seals is required. The seal cartridge of the present invention provides a protected seal design which improves seal integrity in rotatable magnetrons.

An improved rotatable magnetron enabling efficient removal and replacement of a target structure, having axially movable structures including at least one spindle, which may be extended to engage or retracted to disengage the target structure, and means for extending into a magnet structure within the target structure to selectively fix a rotational position of the magnet structure, and preferably having water and vacuum seals integrated into cartridges which are disposed between spindles and seal housings of the improved rotatable magnetron.

An anchor for boring into a deformable substance which includes an elongate shaft adapted for disposition in the deformable substance is provided. The anchor has proximal and distal end portions and a central longitudinal axis. A handle is carried by the proximal end portion for causing rotation of the shaft about the axis. A drive screw is carried by the distal end portion for moving the shaft in opposite first and second longitudinal directions when the shaft is rotated in respective opposite first and second rotational directions about the axis. The anchor also includes a disengagement assembly carried by the shaft for deactivating the drive screw so that the shaft can rotate relatively freely without longitudinal movement thereof. The drive screw has an outer surface with a helical screw thread formed thereon and is rotatably mounted to the shaft distal end portion for rotation about the axis. The disengagement assembly includes a clutch assembly carried within the shaft for rotationally locking and delocking the drive screw with the shaft. In one embodiment, the end piece has a tip for piercing the soil. In another embodiment, the shaft and screw are provided with longitudinal bores therethrough for permitting the passage of soil therethrough. A fin with a leading end can be pivotly mounted near the trailing edge of the drive screw thread for increasing the torque necessary to rotate the end piece in the second rotational direction.

Apparatus for normalizing and maximizing the performance of a drift tube on the operational axis of a drift tube linac. The apparatus features drift tube positioning through structure which includes orthogonally disposed, facially complementary datum surfaces, interposed which surfaces are dimensionally stable, clamped shim structure. Also offered is independently attachable/detachable (non-dedicated in place) adjustment mechanism employable to effect adjustments in the usual post-coupler structures associated with drift tubes.
