A method and device are disclosed for sampling cells of the human female reproductive tract. According to the method, cells can be collected and observed on the same surface. The device comprises a cell collection substrate and a support member to hold the substrate, and optionally a grasping member.

An improved fibrin glue delivery system is disclosed. The delivery system is comprised of a pair of syringe tubes which can be actuated by plungers simultaneously or independently, a connecting member which holds the syringe tubes in parallel alignment and a unique needle assembly which ensures the components in the syringe bodies will not be comingled until they reach the treatment site. The unique needle assembly also permits the user to manipulate the needles to enhance visibility when the surgeon is working through a speculum or when direct access is difficult.

A bone marrow transplant method and apparatus has been devised for the efficient recovery of bone marrow from a donor or patient by inserting a pair of aspiration needles at the intended site of removal and, through connection with a pair of syringes, the pressure is regulated to bring about selective removal of bone marrow and sinusoidal blood through one of the aspiration needles while positively forcing an intravenous solution through the other of the aspiration needles to replace the bone marrow removed from the site. The bone marrow and sinusoidal blood are drawn into a chamber for mixture with another intravenous solution and thereafter forced into a collection bag. A disposable assembly is provided for ready interchangeable use in association with a fluid flow and valve control unit in carrying out the method and principles of the present invention.

A disposable assembly is provided for ready interchangeable use in association with a fluid flow and valve control unit in carrying out the method and principles of the present invention.

The removal and separation of bone marrow cells for the purpose of analysis is carried out in a minimum number of steps by interposing a filtration chamber between a bone marrow needle and aspirator, withdrawing bone marrow particles together with sinusoidal blood through the filtration chamber so as to filter out or separate the bone marrow particles from the blood, and thereafter opening the filtration chamber to expose the particles for removal from the filter. The filtration chamber is constructed to define a fitting which can be releasably but sealingly connected at one end to the end of the needle and at the opposite end to the aspirator or syringe so that the necessary vacuum can be established and maintained for withdrawal of the specimen through the chamber without danger of contamination; and a seating surface within the chamber is so formed as to facilitate placement of a filter pad to collect the bone marrow particles and expose the particles for removal when the chamber is opened.

Method and apparatus for bone marrow cell separation and analysis

A prepackaged coagulant composition and method of preparing same has been devised for use in direct or topical application to wounds so as to cause superficial clotting in which thrombin is combined with special preservatives and a saline solution. An apparatus and method for accelerating the coagulation of blood and the components thereof uses the injection of an additive and gas to trigger coagulation. The appartus is designed to include a disposable multi-cell pack for minimizing manual handling of the blood and for minimizing exposure thereof to foreign surfaces with each cell containing a specimen of blood disposed above, but separated from, a predetermined amount of additive by means of a releasable cap. The cell pack containing the multiplicity of cells is inserted over a corresponding multiplicity of gas injection nozzles which effect the release of the caps in each cell for injecting the additive and the gas into the blood. As the gas passes through the blood, bubbles that are continually formed in the space above the blood burst and blood transported therein refluxes back into the blood below until coagulation occurs. A first photocell detector determines whether bubbles are formed above the surface of the blood and generates a signal if no bubbles exist due to a gas flow failure. When the blood commences to coagulate, the blood transported in the bubbles becomes gel-like and the transported blood rather than refluxing downwardly becomes trapped in a gauze disposed in the space above the main body of blood. In response to the collection, the level of the main body of blood drops which is detected by a second photocell detector thereby signalling the event of coagulation.

A system for determining the coagulation time of blood and components thereof, the amount of anticoagulant to be injected before and during surgery, and the amount of additive required to neutralize the anticoagulated blood during and after surgery. With collected samples of anticoagulated blood inserted into the system coagulation of the blood is accelerated through the controlled injection of a neutralizing additive by a corresponding injection of regulated gas. Failsafe means determine if gas is being injected into the sample and detection means detect the event of coagulation and indicate the elapsed time for coagulation. Before surgery, an anticoagulant is added to the patient's blood in a quantity necessary to avoid coagulation during surgery. The system responsive to the parameters of the patient's sex, height, and weight and/or pump volume and blood volume determines the amount of anticoagulant to be injected. During operation, samples of blood are periodically taken and analyzed to determine additional amounts of anticoagulant or neutralizing additive to inject. To neutralize the anticoagulant by the injection of a suitable additive immediately after surgery, the system determines the strength of the anticoagulant and calculates the amount of additive to be injected. To prevent the possibility of internal bleeding due to a rebound situation after surgery, additional samples of blood are taken and analyzed to calculate the amount of additive to be injected for neutralization.
