A system may include one or more computing devices configured to receive image data representing illuminated powder of a powder stream between a powder delivery device of an additive manufacturing system and a build surface of a component; determine at least one metric associated with the powder stream based on the received image data; determine whether the at least one metric indicates an abnormal state of the at least one metric; and cause the additive manufacturing system to perform at least one action in response to determining that the at least one metric indicates the abnormal state.

An additive manufacturing system may include an energy delivery device configured to deliver energy to a component to form a melt pool at least partially surrounded by a cooling region; and an optical system comprising: an imaging device; and an occulting device, wherein the occulting device is configured to occult at least part of thermal emissions produced by the energy and the melt pool and transmit at least some thermal emissions produced by the cooling region.

In some examples, a system including a fluid stream monitoring system. The monitoring system includes an illumination device configured to illuminate at least some of particles suspended in a fluid stream; and an imaging device configured to image the illuminated particles at a first image plane that intersects a longitudinal axis of the fluid stream, wherein the illumination device and the imaging device are registered to the fluid stream delivery device in the first image plane, where the first image plane is substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis. The system includes processing circuitry configured to determine one or more physical characteristics of the fluid particles.
