A reconfigurable photonic integrated circuit focal plane array (RPIC-FPA) includes detectors and photonic integrated circuit coupled to the detectors that are configured to mix a return signal beam with local oscillator (LO) beams to produce a combined beam and direct the combined beam to the detectors. The LO beams have reconfigurable optical properties enabled by the RTIC-FPA. The LO beams are individually addressed to switch the detectors between a direct detection mode and various coherent detection modes based on adjustments to the optical properties of the LO beams. In the coherent detection mode, the controller is configured to mix the return signal beam with the LO beam having adjusted optical properties to produce the combined beam, and, in the direct detection mode, the controller is configured to disable the LO beams based on adjustments to the optical properties and to direct the return signal beam to the detectors without mixing.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to methods and systems for identifying a target material. The system includes a tunable laser, an imaging device, and a signal processor. The tunable laser is configured to intermittently direct electromagnetic radiation of at least one selected wavelength at a surface of a target material. The imaging device is configured to capture at least one 'on' image of the surface when the electromagnetic radiation of the at least one selected wavelength is directed at the surface and capture at least one 'off' image of the surface when electromagnetic radiation of the at least one selected wavelength is not directed at the surface. The signal processor is configured to compare, for each selected wavelength, the &#x201c;on&#x201d; image(s) corresponding to the selected wavelength with the &#x201c;off&#x201d; image(s) corresponding to the selected wavelength and identify the target material based on the comparison.

Detection and identification of surfaces and surface contaminants

Various aspects of the disclosure provide a target system that is small and low power. In one embodiment, the target system transmits an intensity modulated light beam to a target (which may be tagged with a fluorescent taggant), collects the resulting return light from the target, and separates out elastic light scatter and fluorescent light in the collected light. The intensities of the elastic light scatter and the fluorescent light are then separately detected by first and second photodetectors, respectively. The first photodetector generates an elastic scatter detection signal based on the detected elastic light scatter and the second photodetector generates a fluorescent detection signal based on the detected fluorescent light. The elastic scatter detection signal and/or the fluorescent detection signal are used to provide one or more of the following functions: 1) target detection, 2) range determination, 3) taggant detection, and 4) taggant discrimination/confirmation.
