First and second pipe elements are joined end to end by a coupling. The first and second pipe elements have a circumferential groove at an end, and each of the grooves has a floor. A plurality of segments, each having oppositely disposed ends, and a respective connection member positioned at each end, form the coupling. A first end of each segment is connected to a second end of another of the segments such that said segments surround a central space for receiving the second pipe element.

Combination sealing member and pipe couplings

A method for preparing a factory assembled pipe coupling includes positioning a flexible, resilient ring within a first channel in the first segment of the coupling, the ring having a ring outer surface engaging the first segment, and engaging a second channel in a second segment of the coupling with the ring outer surface so as to align each connection member on the first segment with a connection member on the second segment. Further steps include attaching the first end of the first segment to the first end of the second segment, and attaching the second end of the first segment to the second end of the second segment and supporting the first and second segments in spaced apart relation from one another on the ring at a distance at least sufficient to permit insertion of the pipe elements into the central space without disassembling the segments.

Method of preparing a pre-assembled pipe coupling

A fitting for joining pipe elements together includes housing portions held preassembled in spaced apart relation to permit pipe elements to be inserted without disassembly of the fitting. Elbow and tee fittings include sealing elements which support the housing portions in spaced relation. Angled surfaces on each housing portion interact with one another to rotate the housing portions in opposite directions to form a rigid joint between the fitting and the pipe elements.

Fitting for joining pipe elements

A sealing member is disclosed having an outer surface that supports segments of a pipe coupling for joining pipe elements in end to end relation. The segments are supported in spaced relation to permit the pipe elements to be inserted into the coupling without disassembly. The sealing member is a flexible ring that has conical lips around its inner circumference to engage and guide the pipe elements into the coupling. A tongue extends radially inwardly between the lips, the tongue having conical shoulders which engage and guide the pipe ends. The tongue locates the coupling segments relatively to the pipe elements.

A method of joining pipe elements in end to end relation using mechanical pipe couplings. The couplings have a plurality of segments attached end to end surrounding a central space. The segments have arcuate surfaces adapted to interface with the outer surfaces of the pipe elements. The method includes inserting end portions of the pipe elements into the central space and then drawing the coupling segments toward one another so as to engage the arcuate surfaces of the segments with the outer surfaces of the pipe elements.

Method of securing pipe elements end to end

A coupling for joining pipe elements in end to end relationship is disclosed. The coupling includes a sealing member having an inner diameter and an outer surface. A plurality of segments are supported on the sealing member's outer surface. Each segment has a pair of arcuate surfaces positioned in space relation on either side of the sealing member. A compression band surrounds the outer perimeter of the segments, the segments being captured between the band and the sealing member. The pipe elements are inserted into the inner diameter between the segments. A tensioning member is mounted on the band. Tightening of the tensioning member causes the compression band to force the segments radially inwardly into engagement with outer surfaces of the pipe elements.

A mechanical pipe coupling formed of segments attached end to end surrounding a central space is used to connect pipe elements having a raised circumferential shoulder in end to end relationship. The segments have arcuate surfaces and arcuate landings which subtend an angle less than 180&#xb0; and which have a radius of curvature greater than the radius of curvature of outer surfaces of the pipe elements on the raised circumferential shoulder. The segments are maintained in spaced relation allowing the pipe elements to be inserted into the central space without disassembling the pipe coupling. Connection members attaching the segments to one another are tightened to engage the arcuate surfaces or the arcuate landings with outer surfaces of the pipe elements to effect the connection.

Deformable mechanical pipe coupling with shoulder pipe elements

A method of manufacturing an installation-ready pipe coupling is disclosed. The method includes providing pipe coupling segments each having an initial radius of curvature and an initial subtended angle. The segments are each deformed so as to take a permanent set and have a final radius of curvature greater than the initial radius of curvature and a final subtended angle smaller than the initial subtended angle. The deformed segments are assembled in end-to-end relation using adjustably tightenable fasteners to form a coupling. The deformed segments are maintained in spaced relation so that pipe elements can be inserted between them without disassembly of the coupling.

Installation-ready pipe coupling method of manufacture

A deformable mechanical pipe coupling is disclosed. The coupling has a plurality of interconnectable segments that straddle the ends of pipe elements to be joined. The segments have arcuate surfaces that engage outer surfaces of the pipe elements. The outer surfaces subtend an angle of less than 180&#xb0; and have radii of curvature greater than the radii of curvature of the pipe element outer surfaces. The segments have adjustably tightenable connection members for connecting the segments to one another. When the connection members are tightened, the arcuate surfaces deform and conform to the radius of curvature of the outer surface of the pipe elements.

Deformable mechanical pipe coupling

A preassembled mechanical pipe coupling having spacers is disclosed. The coupling has a plurality of interconnectable segments that straddle the ends of pipe elements to be joined. The segments have arcuate surfaces that engage outer surfaces of the pipe elements. Spacers, positioned between the segments, maintain them in spaced apart relation sufficient to allow the pipe elements to be inserted between the segments. The segments have adjustably tightenable connection members for connecting the segments and drawing them to one another. When the connection members are tightened and the effect of the spacers is overcome, the arcuate surfaces are brought into engagement with the outer surfaces of the pipe elements.

A preassembled mechanical pipe coupling for joining pipe elements in end-to-end relationship is disclosed. The coupling is formed from a plurality of interconnectable segments that are initially maintained in spaced apart relation. The segments have arcuate surfaces that project inwardly. Connection members in the form of lugs and fasteners are mounted on the segments. The connection members are adjustably tightenable for drawing the coupling segments together and forcing the arcuate surfaces into engagement with the outer surfaces of the pipe elements. Notches are formed at ends of the arcuate surfaces to provide clearance allowing the pipe elements to be inserted between the segments when they are in the pre-assembled, spaced apart configuration.
