There is disclosed a process for obtaining a water-borne crosslinkable composition comprising a block copolymer comprising at least blocks [A][B](where x is an integer from 3 to 80 (inc.), where y is an integer &#x2267;10 and where y&#x3e;x) and a polymer P, the block copolymer-polymer having an acid value &#x2266;150 mg KOH per g of block copolymer-polymer, where at least block [A] and [B] is obtained by a controlled radical polymerisation of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer via a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) mechanism in solution in the presence of a control agent and a source of free radicals; and where polymer P is obtained in the presence of blocks [A][B]by an emulsion polymerisation process.

Water-borne crosslinkable block copolymers obtained using raft

An aqueous emulsion comprising at least a covalently bound vinyl oligomer and vinyl polymer, wherein said vinyl oligomer comprises 5 to 85 mol % of vinyl monomers bearing quaternary ammonium ion functional groups or quaternisable amine functional groups and is obtained by a controlled radical polymerisation of at least one vinyl monomer via a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer mechanism in solution in the presence of a control agent and a source of free radicals; wherein said vinyl polymer is obtained by emulsion polymerisation of vinyl monomers in the presence of the vinyl oligomer; wherein the weight % ratio of vinyl oligomer to vinyl polymer is in the range of from 0.5:99.5 to 65:35.

Aqueous oligomer / polymer emulsion with cationic functionality

An aqueous coating composition (which optionally can coat plastic substrates) the composition comprising a block copolymer and a polymer P; where the block copolymer comprises at least blocks [A][B]; where at least block [A] is obtained by a controlled radical polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer via a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) mechanism (optionally in solution in the presence of a control agent and a source of free radicals); and wherein block [A] comprises 20 to 100 mol % of ethylenically unsaturated monomer units bearing water-dispersing functional groups; wherein block [B] comprises 20 to 100 mol % of ethylenically unsaturated monomer units bearing plastic adhesion promoting functional groups; and wherein polymer P is prepared in the presence of blocks [A][B]. The compositions may be used to coat plastic substrates, foam; surfaces having low surface energy, hydrophobic substrates and/or polyolefins.

Adhesion to plastic with block copolymers obtained using RAFT

Aqueous coating composition comprising a blend of 20 to 60 wt % of a multistage vinyl polymer (A) comprising 5 to 40 wt % of at least one hard polymer stage (i) having a Tg&#x2267;50&#xb0; C. and 95 to 60 wt % of at least one soft polymer stage (ii) having a Tg&#x2266;&#x2212;5&#xb0; C.; and 80 to 40 wt % of a vinyl oligomer-polymer (B) comprising 15 to 50 wt % of at least one alkaline soluble oligomer (iii) and 85 to 50 wt % of at least one vinyl polymer (iv) having a Tg in the range of from &#x2212;20 to 30&#xb0; C.
