Methods and systems enable computers to be equipped and provisioned to access any cellular network without the need for carrier-specific inventory or point-of sale provisioning of the cellular network transceiver. Multiple digitally signed provisioning data images for multiple carriers are stored on the computer's hard disk memory prior to sale. Upon initialization, provisioning data for a selected carrier are downloaded to random access memory of the cellular network data transceiver from the hard disk. A version number within the provisioning data is compared to a version number of provisioning information stored in the transceiver's nonvolatile memory. If the downloaded provisioning data is newer than that stored in nonvolatile memory, the downloaded provisioning data is stored in the nonvolatile memory. The random access memory is cleared of the downloaded provisioning data and initialization of the transceiver is begun. Updated provisioning information can be received and stored to the hard disk.

Method for generically handling carrier specific provisioning for computer cellular wireless cards

Systems and methods for confirming that a circuit card is compatible with a computer in which it is installed includes accessing a list of compatible circuit cards stored in the computer's nonvolatile memory, determining if the circuit card is included in the list of compatible circuit cards; and storing operating software on the circuit card only if the circuit card is included in the list of compatible circuit cards. The list of compatible circuit cards can be the Plug-and-Play Identification (PnP ID) list stored in the computer's BIOS data. Power may be removed from the circuit card if the circuit card is not include in the list of compatible circuit cards.

Method and system for certifying a circuit card lacking any non-volatile memory as being compatible with a computer

A wireless communication device contains a prefix storage area containing one or more prefixes that may be automatically pre-pended to a destination telephone number. The destination telephone number may be entered manually by the user using a keypad or automatically entered from a telephone number storage area. The system analyzes the destination telephone number and determines whether one or more prefix pre-pending levels have been enabled. If enabled, the system automatically pre-pends the selected prefixes to the user-entered destination telephone number to generate a complete destination telephone number. The automatic pre-pending can extend to all telephone numbers entered by the user, or may be limited to telephone numbers in the telephone number storage area. Similarly, the system can be enabled continuously, or may be disabled when the user turns off the wireless communication device.

System and method for the automatic prepending of digits in a wireless communication device

A method and apparatus for remote control of software and hardware features of a wireless communication device using Short Message Services (SMS). A wireless communication device with SMS capabilities can be remotely configured by sending specifically configured SMS messages. A manufacturer can configure a wireless device to have control over certain features accessible through SMS messages. A configuring SMS message is constructed using a specific format to inform the wireless device of the presence of a feature control message. Predetermined combinations of characters unlikely to occur in normal messages are used as message start and stop delimiters. A series of fields are defined in the SMS message with the fields separated by delimiters distinct from the message start and stop delimiters. Commands may be sent to the wireless device using point-to-point as well as broadcast SMS messages. The wireless device receives the SMS message and identifies it as a feature control command by noting the presence of a message start delimiter. The message is then parsed according to the field delimiters within the message. The wireless device then configures software and hardware features according to the contents of the SMS message fields.

Method and apparatus for remote activation of wireless device features using short message services (SMS)

A technique to switch between upper and lowercase alphabetic characters in a wireless communication device measures the period of time in which a numeric key is held in the depressed position by the user. If a numeric key is pressed by the user for a period of time less than a predetermined threshold time, the selected alphabetic character is displayed in a default character case. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold period, the character case is altered and the altered alphabetic character is displayed for the user. The user selects the desired alphabetic character by activating a selected numeric key one or more times corresponding to the desired alphabetic letter. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the threshold period during any of the button depressions, the system automatically changes to the altered alphabetic character case. The alphabetic character case is controlled on a character by character basis such that entry of a new alphabetic character uses the default character case unless the selected numeric key is again held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold.
