A system and method wherein mobile nodes scan both 802.16 and 802.11 radio channels for neighbor access points. A mobile node reports both WiMax and WiFi neighbor access points to its parent access point. A parent access point advertises both WiMax and WiFi neighbor access points to child mobile nodes to facilitate faster roaming and load balancing. A parent WiMax AP can direct a mobile node to roam to a neighbor WiFi access point that has a lighter load or offers enhanced services. As an option, a location tracking protocol is used to determine the location of a mobile node and the mobile node's parent AP advertises neighbor APs that offer services in the mobile node's location.

System and method for integrated WiFi/WiMax neighbor AP discovery and AP advertisement

A network system for authorizing an endpoint node for a communication service includes an operator network and an organization network. The operator network operates to perform a device authorization operation to authorize the endpoint node for a communication session. The organization network operates to facilitate a service authorization operation to authorize the endpoint node for the communication service of the communication session.

An exemplary embodiment providing for one or more improvements includes a method for use in a mobile station operating in a multi-protocol wireless network environment that supports a first wireless communication protocol and a second wireless communication protocol wherein the network environment allows the mobile station to seamlessly roam utilizing the first and second wireless communication protocols. The method includes establishing a first link layer connection using the first wireless communication protocol; and establishing a second link layer connection using the second wireless communication protocol wherein a single mobile identifier, corresponding to the mobile station, is used in the first and second connections.

Seamless roaming for dual-mode WiMax/WiFi stations

Facilitating node mobility includes facilitating a communication session for a mobile node communicated along a first communication path. A first anchor point manages context information for the communication session, where the context information comprises information for supporting the communication session. A command to transfer the context information to a second anchor point is received from a home agent. The second anchor point is operable to facilitate communication of the communication session along a second communication path. The context information is transferred in response to the command.

Transferring context information to facilitate node mobility

An address assignment mechanism allows an address server to receive requests for network addresses from computer systems. Based on an identity of the requesting computer system, the address server selects an address for use from local addresses or guest addresses. If the address server identifies the requesting computer system as a guest computer system, then a guest address selected from a set of guest addresses is assigned and provided to that computer system, whereas if the address server identifies the requesting computer system a local computer system then the address server selects and assigns a local address (from the set of local addresses) to the requesting local computer system. Data communications devices selectively route data portions sent from computer systems depending upon if those data portions contain guest addresses or not. Selective transport therefore restricts access to certain parts of the network if the data portion contains a guest address.

Apparatus and methods for allocating addresses in a network

Facilitating mobile node mobility includes facilitating at a current access location a communication session for a mobile node. Context information for the communication session is managed, where the context information comprises information for supporting the communication session. A predictive set comprising one or more predicted next access locations is established for the communication session. The context information is transferred to the predicted next access locations prior to the communication session moving to an actual next access location.

Predicting movement of a mobile node from a current access location to next access locations

Obtaining neighborhood information for a cell includes establishing the presence of a mobile node in a first cell having a first cell site. A communication session for the mobile node is facilitated. Neighborhood information is determined in response to facilitating the communication session. The neighborhood information describes a second cell having a second cell site. The neighborhood information is recorded in a neighborhood information record.

Dynamically obtaining neighborhood information

A system and method are provided which enable a data communications device to be programmed to automatically and dynamically modify allocation of resources upon the occurrence of specific events or times without having to break active sessions of data communications. Resource allocations can be made by bandwidth reservations provided to a data communications device via a network policy or via individual bandwidth reservation messages. The bandwidth allocation information can specify a session of data communication and future bandwidth modification information, such as a time or event, that will cause the data communications device to modify an amount of bandwidth reserved for the specified session of data communications.

Apparatus and methods for providing event-based data communications device configuration

Supporting communication sessions at a mobile node includes determining at a mobile node an address for one or more interior network elements of a network system. A interior network element is distinct from an edge network element of the network system, and is operable to establish a communication session. An address for an interior network element is inserted into packets. The packets are sent from the mobile node to the interior network element to communicate directly with the interior network element. The communication session is established using the interior network element.

Supporting communication sessions at a mobile node

Authorizing a mobile node for a service includes receiving at an enforcement point a session initiation invitation from the mobile node. The session initiation invitation comprises an authorization token and a session initiation object. Whether the mobile node is authorized to access a service is determined in accordance with the authorization token. The authorization token is sent to an authorization server if the mobile node is authorized to access the service. The session initiation object is sent to a server to initiate the service if the mobile node is authorized to access the service.

Authorizing a mobile node for service

Techniques are provided for controlling a flow of packets in a data communications device. A first technique involves transferring packets of a particular packet flow based on an initial policy scheme, and planning a scheme change to change the initial policy scheme to a new policy scheme based on conditions within the data communications device existing while transferring the packets of the particular flow based on the initial policy scheme. The first technique further involves providing a change signal to the source of a particular packet flow (e.g., a sending host). The change signal indicates that the data communications device has planned the scheme change. Additionally, the first technique involves processing the scheme change based on either a reply signal from the source or an absence of a reply signal from the source. Another technique involves outputting packets of a particular packet flow to a data communications device that transfers the packets of the particular packet flow based on an initial policy scheme. Additionally, the technique involves receiving, in response to the outputted packets of the particular packet flow, a change signal from the data communications device. The change signal indicates that the data communications device has planned a scheme change to change the initial policy scheme to a new policy scheme. Furthermore, the technique involves providing, to the data communications device, a reply signal that provides direction for processing the scheme change.

Methods and apparatus for managing a flow of packets using change and reply signals

A method for distributing information in a network environment is provided that includes receiving one or more packets from a communication flow and recognizing a universal generic identification (UGI) associated with the communication flow. The UGI corresponds to an end user that is associated with the communication flow. The UGI is operable to enable a service for the end user in a first network and a second network, the first and second networks being different, whereby either the first network or the second network operates as a home network for the end user.

System and method for allocating and distributing end user information in a network environment

The invention provides a system including methods and apparatus that adjust usage of one or more resources of a data communications channel. The system can negotiate a current resource setting for usage of the resource of the communications channel and can perform communications on the communications channel using the resource. The resource can be, for example, a bandwidth setting of the communications channel. Periodically, the system can renegotiate a new value for the current resource setting upon detecting a negotiation event during performance of communications on the communications channel using the resource. One such negotiation event is an indication that an accrued usage cost of the resource of the communications channel substantially equals or exceeds a cost to renegotiate the current resource setting. Another negotiation event indicates that an actual resource setting of the communications channel substantially equals or exceeds the current resource setting for the communications channel. Another negotiation event indicates that a data communications device using the bandwidth setting of the communications channel has requested to negotiate a new value for the current resource setting of the communications channel.
