A method and apparatus for containing fume emanating from the surface of molten iron or slag flowing along an open stretch of runner in a casthouse comprises directing an air curtain across the open stretch of runner.

Fume containment

A gas conduit delivers gas to an electro-precipitator at an angle to the direction of gas flow through the precipitator. Projections are provided in the conduit adjacent the inlet to the precipitator to increase the thickness of the turbulent zone of the gas boundary layer; this urges gas towards upstream regions of the inlet of the precipitator, and thereby enhances even distribution of the gas across the inlet.

A fume extraction assembly comprises an elevated canopy adapted to collect fume; and elongated outlet means offset from an apex of the canopy and having gas flow characteristics compensating for a tendency to uncontrolled extraction rates along said outlet means.
