A rotary dynamo electric machine comprising a stator, a rotor rotatable relative to the stator and having an air gap between the rotor and the stator. The permanent magnet poles of the machine each include a two part flux shunt formed from a material of high saturation flux density, each first portion extending from the back iron, towards the air gap of the machine and being magnetically continuous with the back iron, each first portion being adjacent that end of its respective permanent magnet which is the strong tip end in use. Each shunt second portion extending from the respective shunt first portion circumferentially of the machine towards that end of the respective permanent magnet which is the weak tip end in use, and engaging the air gap face of the respective permanent magnet each second portion in that region thereof which is engaged with the respective permanent magnet being shaped such that its cross-sectional area increases substantially linearly from a minimum at its free end. Each shunt first portion having a minimum cross sectional area equal to or greater than the maximum cross sectional area of the respective second portion.

Permanent magnet rotary dynamo electric machines

A unitary starter motor and generator including a rotor assembly having a plurality of circumferentially disposed rare earth-iron permanent magnets, a stator assembly within which said rotor assembly is rotatable, said stator assembly including a laminated annular stator body formed from a silicon containing iron alloy of high electrical resistivity and low magnetic loss, and a multiphase stator winding secured to the inner periphery of said stator body and lying in the airgap defined between the stator body and the rotor assembly. A semiconductor inverter-rectifier assembly electrically connected with said multiphase stator winding for rectifying and controlling the output from the stator winding when acting in generator mode, and for switching the input to the winding when operating in motor mode, and, a sensing means associated with said semiconductor inverter-rectifier assembly whereby the angular position of the rotor assembly is determined for controlling switching of the electrical input to the stator winding to afford operation in motor mode.

Cooling system, particularly for vehicle engines, includes a coolant circulation pump (21) and a cooling fan (20) typically coacting with a radiator (14) both driven by a common variable speed motor (18) whereby both the pump and fan can be operated at lower and higher speeds in response to the sensed temperature levels of the coolant.

A permanent magnet rotary dynamo electric machine wherein each permanent magnet pole is equipped with a flux shunt which provides a direct flux path between the airgap at the strong tip region of the pole and the iron circuit upon which the pole is supported, the direct flux path shunting magnetic flux to the iron circuit when the current in the associated winding is low, but being saturated by flux flowing in the opposite direction at high values of winding current.

Permanent magnet rotary dynamo electric machine

A permanent magnet dynamo electric machine is provided with a shield of high saturation flux density at the weaker or lower flux tip or edge of a permanent magnet pole face to prevent both circumferential and axial demagnetization of that portion of the pole face. The shield resides in a recess in the pole face so as to maintain a constant width air gap between the rotor and stator and has a thickness in the range of 5-15% of the overall thickness of the shield and pole combined. The shield and its pole face extend axially at least over the entire axial dimension of the area swept by the rotor.
