The present invention provides a transport or conveyor belt structure, particularly for use in heavy duty environments such as mining, aggregate and ore handling and other industrial conditions, where the belt preferably comprises a carcass that is made from identical cross-shaped interengaging metal links embedded within the body of the belt so as to provide both strength and flexibility. A method of making such a belt comprising building up layers of belt material and links is also described as are unique structures for joining and splicing belt ends or sections.

Disclosed herein is an apparatus for vulcanizing rubber, particularly for vulcanizing the ends of endless rubber belts. The apparatus disclosed herein is a lightweight and portable steam heated vulcanization apparatus which comprises upper and lower platens comprising hollow bodies having a rigid outer wall and a flexible inner wall and adapted to receive steam therein and transmit heat and pressure to a rubber belt placed between the flexible inner walls of the platens. A steam source is connected to the platens for delivery of steam and a plurality of connecting bolts pass through apertures in the platens and the belt material therebetween to align the platens and secure them together so as to apply pressure to the belt in combination with heat for optimal vulcanization.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for splicing a belt which includes a base to which the belt end is mounted, a holding device which is slidably mounted to move in a direction oblique to the longitudinal direction of elongation of the belt and cutting member means mounted on the holding device. In the preferred embodiment, the cutting member comprises a knife which may be attached to the holding device in one of two orientations, a first orientation of which is designed to enable the knife to trim off the belt end, and the second orientation of which is designed to enable the knife to split the belt end between the plies thereof. In the second orientation, the holding device includes a stepped configuration allowing the knife to be clamped at any one of a number of different elevations so that the splitting procedure may accurately be carried out between the desired plies.

Apparatus for splicing belt

This invention relates to a belt splice and a method of splicing a belt. The belt splice includes in its most basic form a single ply or wire fabric although when the belt is to be used in heavier conveyor systems, a multiple layer fabric weave may be utilized. The metallic fabric weave is inserted into openings sliced along the longitudinal axis of the ends of the belt which are to be spliced together with the metallic fabric weave being coated with cement prior to such insertion if necessary. The splice further includes filling material which may, if desired, be rubber which is inserted in the area of the splice prior to the vulcanization procedure. The method of splicing the belt includes the steps inferred by the above explanation of the belt splice and other method steps including the particular preferred angle at which the belt ends are cut and the particulars of the vulcanization process.

Disclosed is an improved belt core which may be utilized so as to facilitate the winding up of an elongated belt such as, for example, a belt of rubber into a roll for shipping purposes. The inventive core includes a central hole of non-circular shape so that a corresponding non-circular winding shaft may be placed therein. Further, the core includes a recess having a sawtoothed configuration into which recess the end of the belt may be placed so as to retain it on the the core and a plurality of additional recesses which are sized so as to receive therein standard pieces of wood to which may be attached the end of the belt in an alternative manner of attachment of the belt to the core. In one aspect of the present invention, two cores in accordance with the invention may be utilized one at each of the lateral sides of the belt, which cores may be connected together by elongated pieces of wood so as to facilitate the forming of a roll of belt material.

Disclosed herein are method and apparatus for vulcanizing rubber. One example of an environment wherein the teachings of the present invention is quite useful is the environment of the creation of endless rubber belts by vulcanizing the ends of the belt together so as to make the belt endless. The apparatus disclosed herein basically consists of a pair of opposed thin sacks made of a flexible material which may, at the desired thickness thereof, comprise for example stainless steel. The ends of the belt are placed between these sacks and the sacks are supplied with steam at controlled temperature and pressure so as to provide the proper pressure as well as temperature for the vulcanizing process simultaneously. The method of operation of the apparatus basically consists of properly aligning the belt ends between the sacks, reciprocating the sacks toward one another until they snugly surround the belt ends, and controllably pressurizing and heating the belt ends to thereby vulcanize them together through the use of steam supplied within the sacks at a controlled temperature and pressure, followed by the cooling thereof.

An improved sweeper bristle element is disclosed especially adapted for use on a railway roadbed or track cleaner using a rotating drum onto which a plurality of bristles are fixedly supported. Each bristle element preferably includes an elastomeric stem of 80 durometer hardness with a toe of 60 durometer hardness wrapped around the end and one side of the stem. Rotation of the drum imparts centrifugal force on the bristles causing loose material contacting the toes thereof to be driven away. The stem and toe may be reinforced by fabric and/or spring steel and preferably are laminated together in a vulcanization process. The bristles are formed in a paddle-like configuration which increases the structural strength thereof and makes them simple to install on the drum. If desired, the bristle toe portion may be slitted to render the bristle adaptable to tight situations while maintaining the structural advantages of the paddle-like configuration.

A pin lock is disclosed which comprises a shaft coupling connecting a drive shaft with a driven shaft, preferably in the environment of heavy machinery. The pin lock basically consists of an elongated shaft including means at one end for coupling the shaft to drive means and including receptacle means at another end which receives the driven shaft. After the driven shaft is placed into the receptacle, a pin is inserted into holes formed in the receptacle and this pin overlies the driven shaft to prevent radial movement thereof.

A viscosimeter having a first cell containing mercury or other electrically conductive fluid, a second cell containing a sample of fluid of unknown viscosity, and a pair of passages interconnecting the ends of the cells to form a closed circuit. A plurality of electrodes extend into the second cell in spaced relationship with each other along the cell's axis and are connected to an electrical circuit. Upon the opening of valves in the two passages, the conductive fluid urges the sample fluid through one of the passages and flows through the other passage into sequential contact with the electrodes in the second cell. The electrical circuit detects the rate of movement of the conductive fluid past the electrodes and produces an output signal related to the viscosity of the sample.

A method for clearing a railway roadbed of loose material employs elongate sweeper bristle elements, each element comprising a stem terminating in a knob portion which functions as a solid weighting mass and which forms a forward wearing surface. The method includes the steps of rotating a plurality of the sweeper bristle elements over the railway roadbed to be cleared so that the ends of the elements contact the loose material; imparting a centrifugal force on the stem and knob; and striking the loose material with the knob, thereby causing the loose material which contacts the knob to be driven away from the element. The preferred sweeper bristle elements are each comprised of a solid elastomeric stem preferably made of 80 durometer rubber. The stem extends substantially the length of the element and has upper and lower portions. A solid weighting mass forming a forward wearing surface and preferably made from 60 durometer rubber is attached to the lower portion of the stem. The upper portion of the stem engages a rotating drum. The rotation of the drum imparts a centrifugal force on the stem and the knob causing loose material which contacts the element to be driven away from the element.

Method of cleaning railroad track

A sweeper bristle element adapted for use on a railway roadbed or track cleaner employing a rotating drum with element support means. The sweeper bristle element is comprised of a solid elastomeric stem preferably made of 80 durometer rubber. The stem extends substantially the length of the element and has upper and lower portions. A solid weighting mass forming a forward wearing surface and preferably made from 60 durometer rubber is attached to the lower portion of the stem. The upper portion of the stem engages the element support means and rotation of the drum imparts a centrifugal force on the stem and the knob causing loose material which contacts the element to be driven away from the element. The stem and knob may be reinforced by fabric or spring steel. In a preferred embodiment, the knob and stem form a laminated, integral structure.

A flame photometric detector for use with a gas chromatograph comprises a burner to produce a cool hydrogen flame and excite molecules of the gas sample to emit light characteristic thereof, a transparent chimney surrounding the burner and flame to enhance characteristic light emission, a selective light filtering means, and sensing means positioned so as to exclude the flame from its sensing area. The device and method of operation are characterized by a substantially broader range of detection and measurement than is possible with present commercially available equipment.

Apparatus and method for sour gas analysis

An apparatus for longitudinally slitting a roll of sheet material is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a frame having a supply roll shaft mounted at one end and a take-up roll shaft mounted at the other end, the take-up roll being connected to a drive means. A knife means adjustably mounted on the frame is located between the supply and take-up rolls. The frame is pivotably mounted on a support frame and driven by hydraulic means so as to permit the tilting or lowering of either end of the frame to allow loading and/or unloading of the supply and take-up rolls as well as maintaining a horizontal working position for the frame.
