A combined radiolytic and thermochemical closed cycle process for production of hydrogen from water wherein H.sub.2 S is dissociated at high temperature and pressure by radiation, such energy being sufficient to provide dissociation and additionally to heat the reaction products to about 1100.degree. K. Hydrogen is separated from the radiolytic reaction products. The sulfur product is reacted with water in multiple additional thermochemical process steps for which heat of reaction is supplied by the radiolytic reaction products for reconstitution of the H.sub.2 S working fluid and generation of an oxygen byproduct.

Combined radiolytic and thermochemical process for generation of hydrogen

A piston is moved by a laser incited fusion reaction such as deuterium-tritium (D-T) to thereby produce an expandable fusion chamber. When a gaseous substance such as CO.sub.2 is presented in the presence of the fusion reaction, it is dissociated into CO and O.sub.2 component mixture and the expansion of the chamber rapidly cools the mixture and quenches the back reaction thereby producing a greater CO yield. Also the piston produces peripheral power from the fusion reaction in the form of mechanical energy.

Expandable chamber fusion reactor system

Gas and combined gas/steam power cycles in which chemical energy is stored in a gaseous working fluid by radiolytic dissociation at a temperature below the temperature of thermodynamic macroscopic dissociation, such that the dissociated portion of the working fluid exists under conditions of macroscopic thermal non-equilibrium. The dissociated fluid components are then recombined with the energy of recombination adding heat to the working fluid for extraction in the power cycle.

Radiolytic dissociative gas power conversion cycles

The invention disclosed provides a new improved radiolytic-chemical method for gas production by inclusion of oxide of nitrogen in the processing system to inhibit recombination of radiolytic products and to scavenge oxygen from the process stream. The present multi-step chemical and radiation method provides gases which may be used directly as fuel or as a base in production of hydrocarbon fuels.

Radiolytic-chemical method for production of gases

A source of neutrons is provided such as by a fusion reaction, and the neutrons are passed through a series of successive chambers in each of which a radiolytic chemical reaction takes place from bombardment of a sensitive chemical compound by said neutrons. The resulting products are further processed in a chemical reaction with a further compound such as water to release a desired end product such as hydrogen. The chemical reactions in the separate chambers may be selected to operate at different pressures or other physical conditions, and when pressure differences between the chambers are large stay structure is introduced to permit thinner walls more transparent to transmission of the neutrons from one chamber to the next.

Means and method for processing chemicals with radiation

The invention disclosed provides a new improved chemical method for combustible fuel production by converting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to a carbonate following which the recovered carbonate is combined with hydrogen gas to produce combustible fuels e.g. methane and methanol. The present method provides means for fuel generation and may advantageously use heat and radiation energy derived from nuclear reactors. This application implies certain environmental advantages, in that burning of fuels containing carbon derived only from atmospheric CO.sub.2 would not add to the CO.sub.2 content of the atmosphere. Recycling of lime as CaO or Ca(OH).sub.2 would eliminate the problem of disposing of those materials as encountered by others teaching use of carbonates but not using such a closed cycle.
