The copolymer emulsions are prepared by incorporating 1 to 45 wt % tetramethylol glycoluril, based on the amount of vinyl acetate in the copolymer, into an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer consisting essentially of 60 to 94 wt % vinyl acetate, 5 to 30 wt % ethylene and 1 to 10 wt % of a crosslinkable comonomer. Suitable crosslinking monomers include N-acrylamidoglycolic acid and N-methylol acrylamide. Nonwoven products formed by depositing the emulsion onto a nonwoven substrate exhibit significantly improved resistance to organic solvents.

A vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion comprising an aqueous colloidal dispersion of a copolymer containing 65 to 90 wt % vinyl acetate and 10 to 35 wt % ethylene prepared by the emulsion polymerization of the monomers in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of an 86 to 90 mole % partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol, a 98 to 99+ mole % fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol, in a partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol:fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol weight ratio from 3:1 to 1:3, and a nonionic polyalkoxylated surfactant. Vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsions useful as carpet adhesives

Aqueous emulsions containing an ethylene-vinyl chloride (EVCl) copolymer and tetramethylol glycoluril are described for use as binder compositions suitable for application onto nonbonded filter paper. The emulsions are prepared by incorporating 4 to 10 wt % tetramethylol glycoluril, based on the total weight of the emulsion copolymer, into an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer consisting essentially of 65 to 90 wt % vinyl chloride, 5 to 35 wt % ethylene and optionally, up to 10 wt % of a hydroxyalkyl- or carboxylic acid-containing functional comonomer. The polymerization is conducted in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of 3 to 15 wt % polyvinyl alcohol. Filter paper impregnated with these emulsions maintain tensile strength and flexibility upon being subjected to hot oil.

Ethylene-vinyl chloride copolymer emulsions containing tetramethylol

A two stage polymerization process for preparing a vinyl acetate/ethylene emulsion copolymer containing a monomer which is normally incompatible with vinyl acetate. In the first stage the vinyl acetate and ethylene and, optionally, an active crosslinking comonomer and/or latent crosslinking comonomer are free radical polymerized in the presence of a stabilizing system to yield a first stage polymer emulsion. When the free vinyl acetate monomer content of the first stage emulsion is less than about 5%, the second stage polymerization begins by adding the incompatible monomer. Preferably, there is no cessation of the addition of the free radical source during the transition from the first stage to the second stage polymerization. No additional stabilizing system is added to the reaction in the second stage. Vinyl acetate/ethylene/incompatible comonomer/latent crosslinking comonomer copolymers prepared by the two stage polymerization process are suitably used as binders for making nonwoven products.

A vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion which is about 65-70% solids and has a viscosity of less than about 3,500 is disclosed. The emulsion is prepared by copolymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of 2-4 wt %, based on vinyl acetate monomer, of a polyvinyl alcohol having a 100-600 degree of polymerization and 2-4wt %, based on vinyl acetate monomer, of a surfactant.
