A method and apparatus for entangling two or more strands of yarn together in accordance with a pre-selected and changeable pattern so as to obtain twisted yarn with a selected coring level extending for a selected length of the yarn and other selected coring levels extending for various other lengths of the yarn so that a supply such as a package of finished yarn has a variable coring pattern which may be reproducible and possibly changeable.

Variable coring of twisted yarn

A multi-end strand tension controller has an overfeed roll and an underfeed roll with strand engagement surfaces. Depending on the outgoing tension, the strand positioner selectively apply the strand against one of the underfeed rollers to adjust the tension and the output of the tension controller. The underfeed roller is fed at a speed slower than the speed of the strand while the overfeed roller is fed at a speed greater than the speed of the feed of the strand. Multiple strands forming the web can be provided utilizing a controller and different predetermined tensions may be applied to each of the individual strands based upon loading of individual strand positioners.

Multi-end strand predetermined tension controller

A tube holder on a creel receives a cardboard tube with a yam wound thereabout. The tube holder is preferably equipped with a tube stop at a non-feeding portion of the tube holder and a tube end protector which is preferably connected to the tube holder at a feeding end of the tube holder. The tube end protector is constructed at least partially out of a resilient material wherein the tube is placed over the tube end protector causing it to deflect until the cardboard tube is properly located on the tube holder wherein the tube end protector resumes its normal configuration and protects the line wound about the cardboard tube from any potential defects at the feeding end of the cardboard tube.
