A submarine optical repeater includes a submarine amplifier module, which further includes a pumping laser module and an optical detector module. The pumping laser module generates optical amplifications within an optical cable, and, in the case of a fault in the optical cable, the optical detector module detects at least one characteristic of an optical signal caused by the fault in the optical cable. This configuration then identifies a particular signal characteristic that indicates a fault within the optical cable.

A method for adjusting a pointing angle of an actively stabilized camera is provided. The camera is housed by an active stabilization system configured to stabilize the camera in accordance with a commanded pointing angle. The active stabilization system comprises a steering member rotatable around one or more of a pan axis, tilt axis, and roll axis of the system. The method comprises: deriving a joint angle measurement of the steering member associated with a rotational movement of the steering member and adjusting the pointing angle of the camera, based on the derived joint angle measurement, in a direction of the rotational movement of the steering member, if the joint angle measurement exceeds the threshold window. If the joint angle measurement is within the threshold window, the pointing angle of the camera is actively stabilized in accordance with the commanded pointing angle.

Method and system for enabling pointing control of an actively stabilized camera

An optical communication link that includes two nodes interconnected by an optical channel that comprises optical fiber(s), and that is used to communicate an optical signal comprising multiple optical signal wavelengths. The first node provides an optical signal onto the optical channel towards the second node, or receives an optical signal from the optical channel from the second node. A Raman pump provides Raman pump power into the optical fiber of the optical channel to thereby perform Raman amplification of the optical signal in the optical fiber. The second node determines a quality measurement of at least of optical wavelength signals transmitted by the first node to the second node. The second node also transmits information from the quality measurement back to the first node. A controller at the first node controls at least one parameter of the Raman pump in response to this transmitted information.

The remote control device includes a steering member rotatable around a pan axis, a tilt axis, and/or a roll axis of the remote control device, an inertial measurement unit (IMU) mounted on the steering member and configured to measure a pointing direction of the steering member in relation to the pan axis, the tilt axis, and/or the roll axis, a controller configured to derive a pointing direction update based on the measurements obtained by the IMU, and a transmitter configured to transmit, to a stabilization system configured to stabilize the camera in accordance with a commanded pointing direction, the derived pointing direction update as the commanded pointing direction to effectuate adjustment of a pointing direction of the camera to follow a rotational movement of the steering member.

A active stabilization system and a method for correcting a pointing direction of a camera to compensate for translational movements of the camera are described. The system actively stabilizes a pointing direction of the camera in accordance with a commanded pointing angle. A distance from the camera to a filming target is determined and one or more translational measurements associated with a translational movement of the camera are derived. A correction update is calculated as a function of at least the distance and the one or more translational measurements. The commanded pointing angle of the camera is adjusted based on the correction update to retain the filming target within a field of view of the camera.

A polarization mode dispersion compensator that includes two stages, one for reducing or eliminating first order polarization mode dispersion of an optical signal, and second stage for reducing or eliminating higher order polarization mode dispersion of the optical signal. In each stage, the polarization is adjusted so as to reduce polarization mode dispersion. Based on the power levels of various polarization states generated at the second polarization controller, the optical signal to noise ratio may be estimated. An optical transmission system comprises two optical fibers carrying optical signal traffic between two terminals, and a plurality of optical repeaters coupled to the two fibers each repeater having a permanently connected passive high loss loop back circuit between the two fibers. One terminal includes a transmitter, which launches a pulsed supervisory signal on a dedicated supervisory wavelength into one optical fiber, and a receiver, which detects a portion of the supervisory signal looped back from each repeater in order to identify the existence and location of faults in the transmission system. The pulsed supervisory signal is of sufficiently short duration such that portions of the signal returned from each repeater do not overlap with one another and interference with the counter-propagating traffic is avoided by utilizing a dedicated supervisory wavelength. Each return pulse is integrated sequentially by a single detector and processed by heterodyne reception and synchronous demodulation.
