A five-layered bonded metal product comprising a top layer of aluminum alloy, a second layer of aluminum, a third layer of titanium, a fourth layer of 70-30 copper-nickel, and a fifth layer of steel. The method of producing said multi-layered product comprises the step of explosive bonding. The invention also includes a transition joint between aluminum and steel comprising interlayers of titanium and copper-nickel.

Aluminum/steel transition joint

A three-layered explosion bonded metal product comprising a layer of steel, a layer of titanium and an interlayer of 70-30 copper-nickel between the layer of steel and the layer of titanium. A method using explosive force is provided for bonding the three layers.

Bonded titanium/steel components

A bonding and electrical grounding assembly for interconnecting dissimilar metallic components, especially in a corrosive environment, which includes a flexible first metal strap having secured to each of its ends a first metal lug for mechanical fastening to a boss which may be welded to one of the major components being bonded. The bosses are each bimetallic, the portion of the boss which is in contact with the lug being constructed of the first metal. The other portion of the boss which is to be welded to the major component is constructed of a second metal, that is the same metal as that of the component. The two dissimilar metals of each boss are directly bonded together by explosive cladding, roll-bonding, friction welding or any process which renders the bimetallic interface impervious to corrosion.

A strong transition joint between an aluminum plate and a steel object includes an aluminum sleeve adapted to be fusion-welded to the aluminum plate and a titanium core explosion-welded to the aluminum sleeve in the center thereof with the titanium core having an internally threaded hole adapted to receive a steel bolt so that the occurance and economic consequences of corrosion are minimized.

Uranium-rich niobium and niobium-zirconium alloys possess a characteristic known as shape memory effect wherein shaped articles of these alloys recover their original shape when heated. The present invention circumvents this memory behavior by forming the alloys into the desired configuration at elevated temperatures with 'cold' matched dies and maintaining the shaped articles between the dies until the articles cool to ambient temperature.

Method for fabricating uranium alloy articles without shape memory

The concentration of carbon in uranium metal ingots induction cast from derbies prepared by the bomb-reduction of uranium tetrafluoride in the presence of magnesium is effectively reduced to less than 100 ppm by removing residual magnesium fluoride from the surface of the derbies prior to casting. This magnesium fluoride is removed from the derbies by immersing them in an alkali metal salt bath which reacts with and decomposes the magnesium fluoride. A water quenching operation followed by a warm nitric acid bath and a water rinse removes the residual salt and reaction products from the derbies.

Method for cleaning bomb-reduced uranium derbies

Adhesive plaster compositions are provided by treating particles of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, Eu.sub.2 O.sub.3, Gd.sub.2 O.sub.3 or Nd.sub.2 O.sub.3 with dilute acid solutions. The resulting compositions have been found to spontaneously harden into rigid reticulated masses resembling plaster of Paris. Upon heating, the hardened material is decomposed into the oxide, yet retains the reticulated rigid structure.

Adhesive plasters

Contamination of metals from crucible materials during melting operations is reduced by coating the interior surface of the crucible with a ceramic non-reactive with the metallic charge and disposing a metal liner formed from a portion of the metallic charge within the coated crucible. The liner protects the ceramic coating during loading of the remainder of the charge and expands against the ceramic coating during heat-up to aid in sintering the coating.

Method of melting metals to reduce contamination from crucibles

A method of limiting carbon contamination from graphite ware used in induction melting of uranium alloys is provided comprising coating the graphite surface with a suspension of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 particles in water containing about 1.5 to 4% by weight sodium carboxymethylcellulose.
