A multiband antenna comprises a dielectric substrate with a first surface defining an annular ledge and a central recess with a plurality of pockets. A MIMO radiator body is disposed in the central recess having a first surface defining a plurality of lobes which are disposed in respective ones of the plurality of pockets and having a second surface defining an outer rim and a central shelf A radiator ring is disposed at the annular ledge so that the radiator ring and the outer rim converge along an annular gap therebetween. A plurality of MIMO feed lines provide external connection to respective lobes. The MIMO radiator body and the radiator ring provide a substantially horizontally-directed radiation pattern (e.g., for terrestrial signals). At least one low-profile radiator on the central shelf provides a substantially circularly polarized or vertically-directed radiation pattern for receiving signals radiated from a satellite.

Low-profile automotive universal antenna system

The disclosure is generally directed to a metal foam element configured to provide a multi-purpose functionality to an electrical device in a vehicle. An example apparatus in a vehicle includes a module that houses an electrical device. A metal foam element is attached to the module in a configuration whereby the metal foam element provides a multi-purpose functionality that includes a heat dissipation functionality and an antenna functionality. In an example implementation, the metal foam element is attached to the module in the form of a sheet that is dimensioned to operate as a patch antenna for transmitting and/or receiving a wireless signal associated with the electrical device and to provide a heat dissipation functionality for dissipating heat produced by the electrical device.

Multi-purpose use of metal foam in a vehicle

A multiband antenna comprises a dielectric substrate with a first surface defining an annular ledge and a central recess with a plurality of pockets. A near field communication (NFC) reader module is provided for mounting over a metal panel of a vehicle. A housing of the module is configured to mount adjacent the metal panel. The housing contains a planar array of non-magnetic RF filter elements in the housing proximate to the metal panel. The housing contains a planar antenna coil configured to couple with an external NFC device carried by a user, wherein the array of RF filter elements is disposed between the planar antenna coil and the metal panel to magnetically decouple the planar antenna coil from the metal panel. The housing further contains receiver circuitry configured to decode NFC signals from the external NFC device.

Decoupler for near field communications interface module on vehicle conductive surface

A vehicle includes an antenna system and a controller. The controller may be configured to, responsive to wireless energy, received via the antenna system, exceeding a magnitude and duration indicative of a cellular connection from a nomadic device at a predetermined position in the vehicle in an absence of a connection with the device via a local protocol while the vehicle is in motion, operate a powertrain to limit a speed of the vehicle.

Mobile device monitoring during vehicle operation

A vehicle includes at least one and/or one or more in-vehicle and/or onboard controller(s) that is/are coupled to spaced apart sensor groups that are arrayed within a headliner and/or seats of the vehicle cabin. Each sensor group generally corresponds to and/or with a plurality of and/or one or more seat positions, each having a single seat, and which include a driver zone seat position that has a driver seat. Each sensor group in the array includes at least one signal processor, and a plurality of transceivers, antennas, and/or sensors configured for and tuned to different electromagnetic frequencies and/or powers. Also included are electromagnetically active, directional waveguides that adjust, amplify, and/or attenuate the sensitivity of each of the respective antennas, to electromagnetic energy detected and received from mobile devices located in the vehicle cabin, such that the sensitivity is limited to electromagnetic emissions within a limited effective range for each antenna.

Vehicle cabin mobile device detection system

Various embodiments of the present disclosure provide a system and method for characterizing the radio frequency (RF) functionality of a vehicle remote keyless system (RKS) by separating and precisely characterizing the individual bits of the overall RKS system in an enclosed controlled environment. More specifically, this RKS characterization system includes an enclosed testing chamber for isolating the key fob from the vehicle, and a simulation control system that manipulates RF signals between the key fob and the vehicle for controlled RF signal analysis between the components. In certain embodiments, the RKS characterization system includes an automated process for actuating the key fob. Through this process, the RKS characterization system is able to separately identify the Key Fob Factor, the Vehicle Factor, and the Person Factor, of the vehicle RKS system.

System and method for remote keyless system characterization

A fob includes a case, an antenna, at least one input device, and a positioning element. The case has an interface portion and a handle portion. The antenna is disposed at the interface portion of the case. The input device is disposed on the interface portion of the case. The finger positioner orients a user's hand on the handle portion of the case away from the antenna.

Fob case for reduced transmission interference

A method for adjusting a power setting of a key fob includes receiving an input signal from a sensor by a processor. The processor determines, based at least in part on the input from the sensor, that a person is holding the key fob. Based on the determination that the person is holding the key fob, the processor adjusts an initial power setting of the key fob by a predetermined amount.

Key fob transmission compensation

A key fob includes a power amplifier including an output having an output impedance. A radio frequency antenna connected to the power amplifier output represents a first load impedance to the power amplifier output in a space substantially free of interference for radio frequency transmissions, and a second load impedance to the power amplifier output when a hand of a user is capacitively coupled to the antenna. The difference between the second load impedance and the output impedance of the power amplifier is less than the difference between the first load impedance and the output impedance.

Fob with increased power level from hand-antenna coupling

A method comprising for adjusting a power level in a key fob includes transmitting a first output signal at a first power setting. A feedback signal is received via a feedback mechanism that indicates a first power level of the first output signal. The first output level is compared to a threshold level. A second output signal at a second power setting greater than the first power setting is transmitted if the first output power level is below the threshold.
