An assembly includes a nose piece and a boreless compressor wheel having a nose end configured for receipt of the nose piece and a receptacle at a base end configured for receipt of a rotatable shaft. A method includes fitting a nose piece to a boreless compressor wheel, measuring unbalance and, based in part on the measuring, removing material from the nose piece. Various other examples of devices, assemblies, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

An exemplary thrust collar for a turbocharger includes a substantially annular body that includes an axis of rotation, a bore, opposing end surfaces where one of the end surfaces is substantially normal to the axis of rotation and capable of seating a back end of compressor wheel, and a surface disposed in the bore where the surface is substantially normal to the axis of rotation and capable of seating a surface of a turbocharger shaft. The axial distance between the end surface for seating a back end of a compressor wheel and the surface disposed in the bore for seating a surface of a turbocharger shaft is selected to improve balancing of a rotating assembly. Various other exemplary devices, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

Systems for preventing/controlling compressor surge in an electrically assisted turbocharger comprise a turbocharger having an electric motor disposed around a turbocharger shaft. The electric motor controller is electrically coupled to the electric motor for controlling the rotational movement provided by the electric motor to the turbocharger shaft. A memory is electrically coupled to the electric motor controller and comprises a multi-dimensional map of compressor surge conditions stored therein. Sensors are used to provide desired engine and/or turbocharger operating information for comparing against the stored map data. The sensors are electrically coupled to the electric motor controller. The controller plots the actual operating information provided by the sensors on the stored map to evaluate whether the turbocharger is operating in different operating regions. If the plotted turbocharger operation falls within a surge risk or surge state operating region, the motor controller operates the electric motor in a manner that reduces the rotational speed of the turbocharger shaft.

Turbocharger control systems used with electric assist turbochargers include an electric motor for controlling turbocharger operation. The system comprises an oil pressure sensor attached to the turbocharger for sensing oil pressure for lubricating a shaft bearing assembly. The pressure sensor provides oil pressure information to a control system that controls the operation of the electric motor and/or other operating parameters of the turbocharger and/or the vehicle. The control system regulates operation of the electric motor during operating conditions where a low oil pressure condition is detected when compared to a predetermined minimum. The control system reactivates the electric motor once a desired minimum oil pressure has been detected.

An electric assisted turbocharger has an electric motor with a stator and a rotor that is coupled to a turbocharger shaft carried by a bearing assembly. The stator has a left-hand winding and a right hand-winding each projecting axially outwardly therefrom. The winds each extend a different distance radially along the motor (and are thus asymmetrical with respect to one another), thereby forming a radial gap along an axial end of the stator. The so-formed stator is disposed within a motor housing and together, the stator and motor housing, facilitate placement center housing axial end therein to minimize turbocharger axial length. The rotor is configured to prevent migration of oil into the motor housing, to improve dynamic balance, and comprises an integral thrust washer for placement against the bearing assembly.

System for controlling an electric assisted turbocharger comprise an electric motor disposed within turbocharger, and an electric motor controller electrically coupled thereto for purposes of controlling the same. A memory is electrically coupled to the electric motor controller and is configured with a condition map that correlates electric motor instructions with engine and turbocharger conditions. The system includes sensors that are electrically coupled to the electric motor controller, and that are configured to sense conditions of at least one of the turbocharger and the internal combustion engine that is coupled thereto. The electric motor controller is configured to control the electric motor based upon the input received from the plurality of sensors as compared to the data contained multi-dimensional condition map. The system provides electric motor speed control, boost pressure control dampening, and can be used to produce electricity from the electric motor depending on the particular operating condition.

A system for controlling the temperature of an electric motor in an electric assisted turbocharger that is coupled to an internal combustion engine has a turbocharger with an electric motor disposed within a motor housing. The motor housing has a motor housing inlet and a motor housing outlet. The turbocharger has a compressor with a compressor inlet and a compressor outlet. The turbocharger also has a turbine. A first cooling hose is coupled to the compressor outlet and coupled to the motor housing inlet. A second cooling hose is coupled to the motor housing outlet and coupled to the compressor inlet.

Air cooling system for electric assisted turbocharger

A turbocharger having an electric motor for assisting spin up of the rotor employs a shaft carrying the turbine and compressor impeller with a unitary pinned semi-floating bearing supporting the shaft and a spacer collar carrying the electric motor magnet. The unitary bearing has integral thrust faces engaging a hub of the turbine wheel and the spacer collar. A reduced diameter of the shaft received in the spacer collar allows the collar to engage a greater diameter bearing land allowing the attachment of the compressor impeller with a nut on the shaft extending through a bore in the impeller to firmly engage the impeller, spacer collar and bearing land of the shaft to fix the rotor length. The pinned semi-floating bearing with integral thrust faces provides enhanced reaction moments for negative spring forces created by the electric motor in operation and the additional length of the rotor created by the motor.
