Sensors can be positioned on or near a remotely controlled device to monitor the status and/or internal conditions of the device and transmit the status information through a data link to a control station, where the information can be provided to a user or operator via sensory stimulation signals. Such sensory stimulation signals can include auditory stimulation signals that can convey the information to the user while allowing the user to maintain visual attention on the remote device. The sensor information can be transmitted as digital information from the remote station to a control station, where it is converted to sensory stimulation signals, such as sounds, which can include tones, alarms, speech, other audible sounds, or combinations thereof. An operator controlling the remote device can, upon receiving the sensory stimulation signals, provide input signals for controlling the remote device.

Method and apparatus for communication between a remote device and an operator

A method and system for providing centralized deployment and coordination of field assessment activities. In accordance with one embodiment, an emergency management data processing system includes a field assessment database for storing and processing layered geospatial visual portrayal data and field surveillance attribute data. The emergency management data processing system includes an event setup data input interface for receiving an event identifier associated with an emergency event, a location identifier identifying a portion of the layered geospatial visual portrayal data corresponding to a region affected by the emergency event, and a field surveillance attribute category identifier specifying a category of the stored field surveillance attribute data. The event identifier is then associated with the region data and the specified field surveillance attribute data to generate an event-specific field assessment record.

Modular architecture for rapid deployment and coordination of emergency event field surveillance

A system for automating the gathering of field information that describes the condition of specific geographical locations at specific times via a field information recording device having a GPS receiver for the recording and assignment of the space-time coordinates as information is gathered. The information and space-time coordinates are transmitted to a management center for processing over a communication network. Upon receipt, the field information is integrated into a geographic database such that the information generates a template showing the current state or condition of the identified geographical location on an automated basis. The template and the associated geographical portion of the geographical database are distributed to users via the Internet, intranet or other communication means.
