The present invention provides an optical connector having a housing assembly comprised of polyphenylsulfone (PPSU). PPSU has several characteristics that make it suitable for use with optical connectors including good flexibility, low sensitivity to molding parameters, good environmental properties, and compatibility with anaerobic adhesives, which are often used to attach the optical fiber to the ferrule in private networks. The connector preferably comprises a one-piece housing, which enhances the side-loading characteristics of the connector. The connector preferably comprises a ferrule assembly and an insert that are housed within the one-piece housing. The insert has a keying mechanism formed thereon that is adapted to mate with a keying mechanism formed in the housing. When the insert is inserted into the first end of the housing, the keying mechanism of the insert interlocks with the keying mechanism of the housing to lock the insert into place within the housing.

Optical connector having a housing assembly that is comprised of polyphenylsulfone

The present invention provides a connector for terminating an optical fiber. The connector comprises a one-piece housing, a ferrule assembly and an insert. The insert has keys formed thereon that are adapted to mate with keyways formed in the housing. The housing has a first opening formed therein that first receives the ferrule assembly and then the insert and a second opening opposite the first opening. The end of the ferrule assembly that holds the end of the optical fiber protrudes through the second opening. The insert has a flange thereon that has two oppositely located flat surfaces and two oppositely located keys. The keys each have a chamfered surface. The keys and the flat surfaces of the flange provide the flange with a substantially rectangular cross-section. The first opening formed in the housing has a substantially square cross-section. When the insert is inserted into the first end of the housing, the substantially square cross-section of the opening aligns with the oppositely located flat surfaces of the flange to thereby cause the keys of the flange to align with the keyways formed in the surfaces of the housing. The chamfered surfaces of the keys deflect the sides of the housing outwardly as the insert is inserted into the housing. The keys of the insert are then received by the keyways formed in the housing to lock the insert into place within the housing.

Optical connector having a one-piece housing

The invention allows for an increase in termination density for customer cable pairs in electronic cabinets, building terminals, and protectors and switching equipment terminations in central offices by providing a connector module is provided having a first insulating housing cap including a row of slots and a row of contact cavities defined within the first housing cap by contact guiding walls. Each slot is adapted for receiving a wire and each cavity is arranged in open communication with one of the slots and has a first orientation relative to the slots. A second insulating housing cap including a row of slots and a row of contact cavities defined within the second housing cap by contact guiding walls. Each slot is adapted for receiving a wire and each cavity being arranged in open communication with one of the slots and has a second orientation relative to the slots. A row of contacts are mounted within the first and second housing caps. Each contact includes a first wire termination portion capable of providing electrical connection to a first wire and being mounted within the first housing cap so as to be positioned within the first housing cap slot, and a second wire termination portion capable of providing electrical connection to a second wire and being mounted within the second housing cap so as to be positioned within the second housing cap slot.

High density connector module

A cable payout tube having a large diameter cable entrance end and an even larger cable exit end, for accommodating stiff cable without kinking thereof. The interior of the tube has cable gripping chambers extending along at least a portion of the length thereof, the chambers being tapered to allow wedging of the end of a cable therein. A flange and locking tabs enable mounting the tube in an opening in a carton containing the cable.

Cable payout tube

A payout tube adapted to be secured to a container having wire or cable contained therein, has a flange at the entrance end thereof. The flange has a radiused surface wherein the radius is greater than the critical or kinking radius R.sub.c, and a central opening where the radiused surface fairs into the inner wall of the tube, with the inner wall being substantially tangential to the radiused surface. A plurality of strengthening ribs are located on the underside of the flange and extend along the outer wall of the tube, with certain ones of the ribs intersecting other ribs at right angles thereto. Mounting mechanism located at the exit end of the tube also has strengthening ribs, with strengthening members intersecting the ribs at right angles thereto. Due to the configuration of the flange, tube, ribs and mounting mechanism, the payout tube can be formed or molded as one integral unit with a consequent reduction in production costs.
