An aircraft fuel tank system includes at least one fuel tank having a plurality of interconnected bays and a vent arranged so as to allow an inward venting of atmospheric air. The system is arranged so as to direct the inwardly vented air along a vent duct. The vent duct is arranged so as to convey the inwardly vented air to substantially each one of the interconnected bays.

Aircraft fuel tank inerting system

A modified electroplated nickel-based metallic alloy coating and method of forming the same is provided. The electroplated coatings exhibit unique microstructure and composition which improves performance over conventional metallic materials. The coatings have significantly higher strength at elevated service temperatures.

Electroplated coatings

A method for repairing a blade forming a cathode and having a surface to be coated defining a critical area, utilizing an anode, an electrolyte bath including insoluble particles, and a mounting on which the blade is mounted in a working position relative to a reference wall. The mounting is placed in the bath, and the particles and the metal of the anode are co-deposited to form the coating on the surface to be coated. The anode is typically placed facing the critical area and the mounting includes a mechanism for monitoring current lines to obtain a coating with a relatively constant, predetermined thickness for the critical area, that gradually falls to a value of substantially zero along edges of the coating.

Method and an assembly for electrolytically depositing a coating

A process for treating a gas stream comprising hydrogen sulphide, the process comprising the steps of: (i) mixing a first gas stream comprising hydrogen sulphide with a second stream comprising sulphur dioxide to produce a combined stream, whereby elemental sulphur is produced by a reaction between the hydrogen sulphide and the sulphur dioxide; (ii) removing elemental sulphur, and optionally water, from the combined stream; and (iii) oxidizing at least some of the elemental sulphur to form sulphur dioxide for use in the second stream, wherein, the reaction is conducted at a temperature of from 15 to 155&#xb0; C. and a pressure of at least 3 MPa.

Electrodeposited composite coatings

A method of producing a gas turbine blade having an abrasive tip comprising producing a binding coat on the tip of the blade body by electrodeposition, the binding coat comprising MCrAlY where M is one or more of iron, nickel and cobalt, anchoring to the binding coat coarse particles of an abrasive material by composite electrodeposition of the particles and an anchoring coat from a bath of plating solution having the abrasive particles suspended therein, and then plating an infill around the abrasive particles. The anchoring coat may be of cobalt or nickel or MCrAlY as above defined and preferably has a thickness less than 30 .mu.m. The infill material may also be MCrAlY as above defined. Preferably, deposition of the infill is accompanied by vibration of the blade in a direction which is substantially vertical and substantially along the axis of the blade.

Gas turbine blades

A process for the production by electrolytic or electroless deposition on a workpiece of a composite coating comprising a metal matrix containing particles is particularly suitable for workpieces of complex geometry or having abrupt changes of shape or sharp edges such as gas turbine blades. The process in which the particles are codeposited with the metal from a solution in which the particles are insoluble comprises inducing circulation generally upwards in one zone and generally downwards in a second zone, locating the workpiece in the second zone and rotating the workpiece about an axis having a horizontal component, the rotational cycle including periods of higher angular velocity and periods of lower angular velocity, preferably a stop/go cycle. Preferably, the workpiece is also rotated about a second axis which is non-parallel with and preferably perpendicular to the first.

Production of coatings

A method of producing an overlay coating on a substrate such as a turbine blade which comprises: (1) plating a protection layer comprising a metal matrix M.sub.1 containing particles of CrAlM.sub.2, (2) plating an anchoring layer comprising a metal layer containing larger particles, and (3) spray coating a thermal barrier of a refractory material.

Overlay coating

A process of and apparatus for coating an article with a layer of metal incorporating particles. The article is placed in a barrel together with the particles and the barrel is placed in a plating bath and rotated therein. The barrel has an opening covered by a cover which is pervious to the solution but impervious to the particles. The article is thus flowed over by solution within the barrel which can have a high concentration of particles but there are no particles in the part of the bath outside the barrel. The process may be electroless or electrolytic. In the latter case, the anode is preferably outside the barrel.

Processes for the electrodeposition of composite coatings

A process for creating a hot dry rock oven for the extraction of heat energy is disclosed wherein the geothermal fluid injection and withdrawal wells are brought into positive hydraulic communication during the creation of the hot dry rock oven. The oven complex is produced by fracturing the formation from a plurality of bore holes simultaneously.
