A device for circumscribing a target site with a beam. The target site is located within a target body. The path of the beam is varied rotationally so as to form a cone with an isocenter at the cone's apex. The isocenter is fixed on the approximate center of the target site. The target body is rotated about a vertical axis passing approximately through the center of the target site, and the rates of rotation of the beam path and body, respectively correspond so that the beam intersects an axis passing through the target site at an approximately constant angle.

A system is provided for communicating energy from one device, such as the rotating frame of a CT scanner, to another device, such as the fixed frame of a CT scanner, where the two devices are capable of movement relative to one another. A plurality of transmitting elements are mounted on one of the devices and a plurality of receiving elements are mounted on the other device, spaced equidistantly around the perimeters of the respective devices. The number of receiving elements is one different than the number of transmitting elements, and the range of operation between a transmitting element and a receiving element is sufficient to assure an operative relationship between at least one of the transmitting elements and one of the receiving elements upon the relative movement of the devices.

This compound motion makes it unnecessary to perform sequential passes or to relocate X-ray equipment between passes to complete a scan. A conveyor may carry a series of closely spaced turntables to give greatly increased throughput; and coordinated translation and rotation, whereby all objects give comparable images, permitting the images to be compared to find defective products. Preferred geometries greatly simplify the image reconstruction mathematics, particularly where the X-ray source is at the center of a circular object path.

A source of X-rays is movable toward or away from the detector module. The septa have a height which is upstanding above the surfaces of the crystals far enough to reduce lateral X-ray scatter and to cast a shadow upon the surfaces of the crystals responsive to an illumination thereof from said X-ray source. The invention dynamically positions the detector module relative to the distance between the detector module and the source of X-rays in order to reduce substantially to a minimum any shadow in the X-rays cast by the septa upon the surfaces of the crystals.
