In a wired data telecommunication network power sourcing equipment (PSE) coupled to a powered device (PD) carries out an inline power discovery process to verify that the PD is adapted to receive inline power, then a plurality of classification cycles are carried out to convey a series of inline power classes back to the PSE. The series of inline power classes may all be the same, in which case the PD is legacy equipment and is adapted to receive the power level corresponding to that class. If they are not all the same, information is thus conveyed to the PSE which may, for example, correspond to a specific power level to be applied or to other information.

Powered device classification in a wired data telecommunications network

A system (e.g., Fiber Channel Error Detecting Code (FC-EDC)) that maps the 'standard' Hamming codes onto the bits of a 33-bit control block is provided. A mobile node engages in an authentication protocol with a first wireless domain service (WDS) access point in a first subnet. The forwarded authentication credentials are utilized to authenticate the client entering the service area of the second wireless domain service in the second subnet. Methods, devices, and software are provided for generating and sending data packets that contain redundant voice data over VoIP connections made under an unreliable network protocol. The redundant data is packaged either in redundant data packets, or in expanded original packets, to repeat data that originally belongs in other packets. Generation of the redundant voice data is either from the transmitting device or from a retransmitting device, such as a router in the network. Generation is triggered either when errors are detected, or simply when the network resources permit it, or both. The received voice data is processed by the second party to the connection, which is typically a telephone call. The redundant voice data that is actually received is discarded. The invention thus ensures that less voice data is lost than in the prior art over VoIP connections made under an unreliable network protocol.
