A passive MMIC monopulse comparator includes a plurality of lumped element hybrids having pi and T filter structures. In one embodiment, a first hybrid receives first and second downcoverted signals and provides a first output signal to a third hybrid and second output signal to a fourth hybrid. A second hybrid receives third and fourth downconverted signals and provides respective third and fourth output signals to the third and fourth hybrids. The third hybrid provides sum and elevation channel signals and the fourth hybrid provides azimuth and G channel signals.

Radio frequency receiving circuit having a passive monopulse comparator

A compact RF monopulse receiver circuit having a relatively low noise figure which is particularly useful for operation in the millimeter wave frequency range is described. The compact monopulse receiver finds use in small projectile and small missile applications. Also, a combination of transmit signal protection circuitry and receiver circuit architecture allows the RF monopulse receiver circuit to operate in a missile or other projectile which utilizes high RF power transmit signals. The RF monopulse receiver circuit can directly provide a radiation pattern for target detection and tracking or alternatively, the RF monopulse receiver circuit can function as a monopulse feed circuit which can be used, for example, in a quasi-optically fed reflector antenna.

Radio frequency receiving circuit

An antenna system is described including a reflector antenna, responsive to radio frequency signals at a first frequency, having a first reflector surface, a second reflector surface and a Cassegrain feed. The antenna system further includes an array antenna having a plurality of antenna elements responsive to radio frequency signals having a second different frequency, wherein a center element is in a common location with the feed of the reflector antenna. With such an arrangement, an improved dual band antenna system is provided. By providing the center element of the array antenna in a common location with the feed of the reflector antenna, a dual band radio frequency antenna system is provided which is more compact with improved radiation characteristics than known similar configured antennas.

In a guided missile, a microstrip antenna, including a patch radiator with parasitic elements, flush-mounted and conforming to the side of the missile, producing an antenna beam which is tilted in required direction for use as a link or fuse antenna is shown. Parasitic elements are used to direct the beam away from the antenna normal to the desired direction.

A monopulse receiving arrangement is shown to comprise orthogonally polarized and electrically separate monopulse antenna arrays, one such array being made up of juxtaposed slotted waveguides and the other being made up of at least one monopulse array of dipoles printed on a dielectric material.

A radar antenna is shown in a first embodiment to have a ground plane and a feed line on opposite sides of a dielectric sheet and a ring-shaped antenna element on another dielectric sheet to form a microstrip assembly wherein such antenna element is capacitively coupled to the feed line. In a second embodiment the radar antenna has a parasitic antenna element on still another dielectric sheet, such parasitic antenna element being in register with the ring-shaped antenna element.

A matching section for a spiral antenna used in a monopulse receiver is shown to receive a plurality of coaxial cables at equally spaced points along the circumference of a first circle and to guide the center conductors of such cables to arms of a multi-arm spiral antenna at equally spaced points along the circumference of a second circle, the characteristic impedance along the length of the matching section changing smoothly for the sum and difference modes and impedance matching closely to the antenna sum and difference modes.

An antenna, adapted to be used as a monopulse antenna in a guided missile, is shown to comprise four separate microstrip circuits in different quadrants of a circular microstrip arrangement, each one of such microstrip circuits being made up of an array of contiguous rectangular meshes with the widths of the shorter sides of such meshes being varied to provide an amplitude taper.

A radio frequency antenna adapted to provide independently specifiable sum, azimuth, and elevation antenna patterns is disclosed. The antenna includes a plurality of rows of antenna elements each having a corresponding feed network. Each feed network has three row feed ports and couples energy between such feed ports and the corresponding row of antenna elements with independent amplitude and phase distributions. A second feed network couples energy between sum, azimuth, and elevation ports of the antenna and the three row feed ports of the feed networks with independent amplitudes and phase distribution to provide independent sum, azimuth, and elevation antenna patterns.

An octave band phase shifter/polarization switch is disclosed which is comprised of a plurality of serially coupled phase bits arranged to provide, in combination, a four bit phase shifter and a polarization switch capable of providing any selected one of six separate polarization senses. The device is fabricated in a stripline package and each of the phase bits is comprised of a hybrid coupler whose output ports are terminated in switchable reactances. Either packaged microwave P-I-N or N-I-P diodes are utilized as the switchable reactances, and bias voltage for the diodes is provided by means of an octave band choke, comprising a dielectrically loaded coil disposed within a center dielectric layer of the stripline package.
