A multicolor negative image capture film element comprises multiple silver halide emulsion layers that together exhibit a more gradually sloped density to exposure relationship than is customary while providing a combination of improved latitude and desirable overexposure printing density reduction.

Disclosed is a color photographic element comprising a multilayered blue light sensitive record, a multilayered green light sensitive record, and a multilayered red light sensitive record, the red record comprising two or more layers of differing light sensitivity, the most light sensitive layer of the red record containing a red light sensitized first emulsion having at least one wavelength of peak absorption, and at least one of the two most light sensitive layers of the red record containing a red sensitized second emulsion, wherein the first emulsion exhibits, as measured at 0.2 density units above Dmin, at least one wavelength of peak absorption that is longer than the shortest wavelength of peak absorption of the second emulsion. The element provides an advantageous combination of speed and color rendition.

A color negative photographic element is disclosed comprising at least one light-sensitive image dye-forming unit containing a plural number of silver halide emulsion layers having different levels of photographic sensitivity which are spectrally sensitized to the same color region, wherein the silver halide emulsion layer having the highest level of photographic sensitivity of the unit comprises at least 40 wt %, with respect to total silver halide in the layer, of a first silver halide emulsion comprising silver halide grains with an average equivalent circular diameter represented by ECD.sub.1 and from 5 to 35 wt % of a second silver halide emulsion comprising silver halide grains with an average equivalent circular diameter represented by ECD.sub.2, and the silver halide emulsion layer having the second highest level of photographic sensitivity comprises at least 40 wt % of a third silver halide emulsion having an average equivalent circular diameter represented by ECD.sub.3, where the ratio of ECD.sub.2 :ECD.sub.1 is at least 1.6 and the ratio of ECD.sub.1 :ECD.sub.3 is at least 1.2. The invention results in increase in speed (or light sensitivity) of a light-sensitive silver halide photographic material while maintaining good graininess in the mid- to high-exposure regions.

Color negative photographic films having red, green and blue color sensitive records, wherein the ratio of the toe area contrast to the mid-scale contrast for each of the red, green and blue color records is less than or equal to 0.80, and either at least two color records having a toe-area contrast less than or equal to 0.42 or a mid-scale contrast less than or equal to 0.55, or the film having a speed rating of ISO 200 or greater. The mid-scale contrast for a color record is defined as the slope of a straight line connecting a point C and and a point D on the characteristic curve of Status M density versus log Exposure for the color record, where points C and D are located by defining a point A on the characteristic curve at a density level 0.1 above minimum density, a point B is located on the characteristic curve at an exposure value +1.0 Log Exposure beyond point A, and points C and D are located at exposure values -0.45 log Exposure and +0.45 log Exposure with respect to point B, respectively. The toe-area contrast is the slope of a straight line connecting a point E and a point F on the characteristic curve, where point E is located at (mid-scale contrast)/6 density units above minimum density, and point F is located at 0.3 log Exposure higher in exposure on the characteristic curve than point E. Use of such a color negative films are particularly advantageous in making telecine transfers.

A color negative photographic film wherein on the curve of density versus log E for each color sensitive record: (1) a straight line, which connects the point at density Dmin+0.1 and the point at 1.5log E above the exposure required for density Dmin+0.2, has a mathematical slope .ltoreq. 0.50; and (2) the difference in log E is .gtoreq.1.7 between the point 0.9log E above the exposure required for density Dmin+0.2 and the point where the density difference is 0.1 between the curve and the straight line which results from a linear regression of the three density points at exposures 0.3log E, 0.9log E, and 1.5log E above the exposure required for the density Dmin+0.2; and (3) the difference in log E is .gtoreq.1.20 between the exposure needed for density Dmin+0.1 and the point that corresponds to the exposure, in lux-seconds, of 9.2/(Film Speed). The exposure of the foregoing gray card is a typical normal exposure based on the film speed rating (i.e. the film is not overexposed or underexposed).

A color photographic silver halide negative working duplicating element and process comprising (A) a magenta colored masking coupler in at least one blue-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer; and (B) a combination of (i) masking couplers and (ii) color contamination of at least one photographic silver halide emulsion layer enables upon exposure and processing of the element formation of a duplicate image that enables formation of a print image that is visually indistinguishable from the original image. The color photographic silver halide duplicating element is useful in forming duplicate images, especially for color motion picture films.

Fine particle photographic coupler dispersions are prepared by forming a dispersion of a photographic coupler, coupler solvent and auxiliary coupler solvent in an aqueous gelatin medium containing at least about 1% by weight of an anionic surfactant selected from the group consisting of alkali metal salts of alkarylene sulfonic acids, alkali metal salts of alkyl sulfates, alkaryl sulfonate salts, and alkyl sulfosuccinates; and washing the dispersion with water for a time sufficient to remove at least one-fourth of the surfactant.

A color photographic silver halide negative working duplicating element comprising a support bearing, in order from the support, at least one red-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer package comprising at least one cyan image-dye forming coupler that is capable upon exposure and processing of forming a cyan image dye that absorbs in the range of the original image; at least one green-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer package comprising at least one magenta image-dye forming coupler that is capable, upon exposure and processing, of forming a magenta image dye that absorbs in the range of the original image; and at least one blue-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer package comprising at least one yellow image-dye forming coupler that is capable upon exposure and processing of forming a yellow image dye that absorbs in the range of the original image. The silver halide particles in the fastest blue sensitive layer have an equivalent spherical diameter no greater than 0.3 microns, while in the remainder of the layers the silver halide particles have an equivalent spherical diameter of no greater than 0.23 microns. The silver level in the fastest blue sensitive layer is no greater than 30 mg/square foot. A sufficient red absorber is present so that the red record MTF(12) is at least 95% of the green record MTF(12) and the red record F50 is no more than 6/mm less than the green record F50.

A color photographic silver halide negative working duplicating element comprising a support having thereon at least one red-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer comprising at least one cyan image-dye forming coupler; at least one green-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer comprising at least one magenta image-dye forming coupler; and, at least one blue-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer comprising at least one yellow image-dye forming coupler, provides improved images when (a) at least one of the layers comprises a unit of at least two layers including a first layer and a second layer, the first layer having a higher photosensitivity than the second layers and being farther from the support than the second layers; (b) the first layers contain an image-dye forming coupler in an amount insufficient to react with all the oxidized developer formed during development after maximum exposure; (c) the image-dye forming couplers of the first layers being in a dispersion having a mean particle size of less than 0.14 micron; and, (d) the silver halide grains of the first layers having a mean grain volume less than 0.015 cubic micron. Such a photographic element is especially useful in motion picture film duplication providing reduction in granularity of the image.
