An apparatus and method for surgical tracking comprises an imaging device that generates an image of a tissue volume; an electromagnetic (EM) sensor that creates a reference frame for EM tracking in three dimensions; at least one EM sensor adapted to be attached to the tissue to track local deformation and movement of the tissue volume; a processor that registers the image with the EM-tracked tissue volume and surgical tool in real time, and produces an output; and a feedback device that provides feedback about the location of the surgical tool relative to the tissue volume, based on the processor output. Embodiments are particularly useful in soft tissue, such as breast, where deformation before and during a procedure such as tumor resection complicate tracking of the tissue volume and a surgical tool.

Real-time surgical navigation

Provided is a preoperatively designed guidance tool for intraoperative use during acetabular cup replacement surgery, comprising: a patient-specific template having at least one surface that registers with a selected surface of the patient's acetabulum; and a guide portion that provides an orientation or a position and orientation of an acetabular cup according to a preoperatively planned orientation or position and orientation. The guidance tool may further comprise a verification tool that cooperates with the guide portion and includes at least one mating surface that registers with a selected surface of the patient's anatomy, wherein correct positioning of the verification tool on the patient's anatomy confirms correct orientation of the patient-specific template in the patient's acetabulum. Also described herein are methods of acetabulum cup replacement surgery, and methods for transferring a preoperatively planned orientation or position and orientation of an acetabular cup to a patient during acetabulum cup replacement surgery.

Patient-specific guide for acetabular cup placement

Presented is a preoperatively designed guidance tool for intraoperative use during bone or joint surgery wherein the guidance tool is specific to the anatomy of the patient being treated. The guidance tool comprises a body portion, a mating surface provided on the body portion for positioning the guidance tool on a corresponding registration surface of a patient's anatomy. The guidance tool further comprises at least one guide mechanism provided on the body portion for guiding a medical instrument at one or more preoperatively defined trajectories relative to a patient's anatomy. In the event of misalignment, the at least one guide mechanism is adjustable to alter the one or more preoperatively defined trajectories if necessary during intraoperative use. Also presented is a preoperative process for designing the guidance tool.

Patient-specific surgical guidance tool and method of use

Systems and methods for determining placement of prosthetic components in joint including defining patient-specific frame of reference for joint, determining patient-specific postoperative range of motion of joint, evaluating patient-specific range of motion of joint, automatically planning placement of components balancing need for range of motion with prosthesis stability through bony coverage, and applying manual adjustments to the automatically planned placement of component by giving greater or lesser weight to need for range of motion or prosthesis stability through bony coverage. Joint placement methods and apparatuses

The invention relates to surgical bone cement compositions and more particularly to bone cement compositions having aneasthetic properties, and to methods for producing analgesia.

Anaesthetic bone cement

A polymethacrylate or other bone cement composition having analgesic properties is described. Bone cements containing up to 5% by weight of a local anaesthetic agent, such as lidocaine, have been demonstrated to elute sufficient lidocaine to provide an analgesic effect in vivo.

A thin plate patello-femoral-tibial resurfacing prosthesis is described. The patellar component is a metallic shell which is designed to be as thin as possible so as to retain maximum natural bone thickness and hence strength. The metallic patellar component articulates with a plastic insert in a metallic femoral component. The tibial bearing area of the femoral component is metallic for articulation with a plastic proximal tibial prosthesis.
