A motor vehicle operator interface and control algorithm convey diesel particulate filter regeneration status to the operator. The algorithm also allows new control over heretofore automatic regeneration, through limiting the inhibit function. The DPF after-treatment operator interface provides multiple status indications to the operator. In a preferred embodiment this is effected using a switched indicator lamp.

A headlight control system provides a several automated operational features. A problem with such systems in the past is the possibility of inadvertent operation of the vehicle without headlights under low light or other adverse conditions. Automated control is achieved through use of a finite state machine which defaults from a plurality of transient conditions to a running state which provides operational outputs to the low beam bulbs of the headlights.

An automated axle control system provides both indication to the driver when a lift axle should be raised or lowered, and takes action to effect axle positioning when the driver fails to respond. Operations are based on estimates of vehicle weight and vehicle speed and are implemented primarily through preexisting vehicle controllers and a controller area network over which the controllers communicate.

A gearshift to transmission controller interface is based on a controller area network and a gearshift interface interposed between the gearshift and associated displays and the network bus. The shift controller can be made universal to all transmission types of automated manual transmissions by incorporation of a library program relating to a transmission type.

A PTO-logic-configuration system according to the present invention comprises PTO-logic-configuration software and prescribed methods of utilizing the PTO-logic-configuration software to configure PTO-monitoring/control logic according to which the PTO-monitoring/control computer will operate. A PTO-logic-configuration system according to the present invention also includes operating instructions for the PTO-logic-configuration system and means for enabling communication of operating instructions for the PTO-logic-configuration system to a user of the system.
