A printing system includes a printer and a print cartridge. The printer includes a carriage configured to move across the medium. The print cartridge is releasably coupled to the carriage and includes a first printhead and at least three achromatic inks. The at least three achromatic inks have distinct L* values and are contained within at least three chambers in communication with the printhead.

A swath printer and printing method using multiple printmodes per swath to improve printing time for print data that contains a mix of monochrome regions such as text, and color regions such as photographic images. Monochrome regions typically can be printed with a given print quality level using a fewer number of scans or passes over the area than can color regions. Throughput can be improved by identifying color and monochrome regions of each swath, and switching printmodes when printing these different areas of the swath. Because reversing direction at region boundaries in the middle of a swath can adversely affect printing throughput, the ratio of the size of monochrome regions to color regions is analyzed to ensure that throughput will be improved before enabling multiple printmode per swath mode. A number of different combinations of monochrome printmodes and color printmodes can be advantageously implemented.

Printer with multiple printmodes per swath

A printing system for selectively printing with dye-based and/or pigment-based inks depending upon factors including, but not limited to, the type of media, the nature of the print job, and the level of print quality desired. The printing system includes a print head with two (or more) pigment-based black pens, a dye-based black pen, and a plurality of color pens. In a preferred embodiment, the pens are arranged in the following sequence: KABCMY, K being a dye-based black ink dispenser, A and B being pigment-based black ink dispensers, C being a dye-based cyan ink dispenser, M being a dye-based magenta ink dispenser, and Y being a dye-based yellow ink dispenser. This print head arrangement allows the selective printing with dye-based and/or pigment-based inks functionality to be implemented for different types of print media without having to replace print heads and/or cartridges of the printing system. This print head arrangement also accommodates bi-directional printing and under/overprinting printer system features.

An ink-jet printhead assembly including an elongated printhead carriage for supporting a plurality of printheads for movement across a path of travel of print media. The carriage includes a pair of ends and a region disposed equidistant the ends. The carriage supports a pair of staggered printhead arrays and each one of the pair of printhead arrays includes a plurality of spaced apart printheads. At least two of the plurality of printheads have an orifice plate having an edge disposed adjacent the central region, wherein the centrally disposed edge of each one of the orifice plates is collinear with an edge of each of the other centrally disposed orifice plates.

A method and apparatus for printing color images by binary construction from individual colorant dots formed in pixel arrays uses a multi-pass print mode and print masks. Based on color map requirements, a pixel is given a density level. Print masks are provided having mask numbers representing a specific density level. A particular colorant dot is formed only on a pass when the mask number is less than or equal to the specific density level for a target pixel.
