A coke oven door, which includes a metal frame, means for latching the door in a closed position, a sealing member extending around the perimeter of the frame having forward edges adapted to contact a sealing surface on a coking chamber door jamb for effecting a continuous seal. The coke oven battery also having at least one attached protrusion proximate the coking chamber extending outwardly from the battery, such as a latch or a guide bar, said door comprising a door plug passing with clearance and fitting into the coke oven, said plug having an inner surface that forms an interior end wall of the coke oven wherein a first plane is formed by the perimeter of said inner surface. Said door further having a first horizontal dimension between said forward edge of said sealing member and said first plane, and said coke oven battery having a second horizontal dimension between the sealing surface on the door jamb and a second plane that is parallel to a plane formed by said sealing surface of the door jamb which includes the furthest point on the protrusion from the sealing surface on the door jamb, wherein the first dimension is greater than the second dimension, so that when the coke oven door is being placed on the coke oven and is improperly aligned, said door plug comes into contact with the coke oven door jamb to stop further movement of the door and prevent the sealing member from coming into contact with the protrusion.

In the fabricating of a mandrel bar, a plurality of used mandrel bar segments are provided, each of which has a central bore comprising a smooth surface portion and a threaded portion. Each segment has a circumferential recess at an end thereof and a bevelled surface adjoining the recess and extending inwardly of the segment at an angle to the vertical. A coupling has a smooth central boss section and threaded ends. A connection is made by threadedly connecting the ends of the coupling with a pair of opposed mandrel segments, with the smooth boss of the coupling fitting inside the smooth portion of the bore of each segment to effect, with the threaded joint, a straight, tight joint. A weld groove of gull-shaped cross-section is provided between the opposed ends of a pair of mandrel segments, having a body portion formed by a pair of opposed bevelled surfaces and wings formed by a pair of opposed recesses.

Apparatus is provided for decreasing temperature differentials within rectangular metal blooms being heated in a furnace. The apparatus includes elongated internally cooled members located above the blooms adjacent an exit end of the furnace. The longitudinal axes of the internally cooled members are parallel to each other and to the longitudinal axes of the blooms, the latter axes being aligned so as to extend transversely with respect to the direction of movement of the blooms from an entry to an exit end of the furnace.

A feed system is provided for conveying molten metal to a thin section caster having mold surfaces moving exclusively in the direction of casting. The feed system has a passage of circular cross section adjacent to one end thereof for receiving molten metal and a rectangular cross section at the delivery end thereof adjacent to the caster. The feed system is designed for supplying molten metal to the caster at low pressure for 'closed-pool' type caster operation. The point of highest elevation in the metal flow passage of the feed system is on the upper surface of a transition portion where the cross section changes from circular to rectangular adjacent to the nozzle. The level or height of the high point above the centerline of the nozzle exit is selected so as to be less than the pressure of the metal measured in inches at the nozzle exit. This feature enables the maintenance of positive pressure in the metal within the feed system so that ingress of air into the metal is prevented.
