A gear and a method for combining a first gear with a second gear including the steps of moving the first gear relative to the second gear such that a first tooth of the first gear contacts a second tooth of the second gear, pressing the first tooth of the first gear against the second tooth of the second gear such that a resultant force is not directed to a center of at least one of the first gear or the second gear, wherein a torque is created by the resultant force, and rotating at least one of the first gear or the second gear based on the created torque until first teeth of the first gear mesh with second teeth of the second gear.

Gear modification that enables direct off-center engagement

A document handler, such as used in a digital copier, includes an input tray and an output tray, connected by a paper path. Along the paper path are disposed two scan heads, one to record image data from each side of the sheet. The two scan heads are separated from each other along the paper path by a pitch length longer than a sheet to be scanned. The arrangement allows an image on each side of the sheet to be scanned at an exclusive time. For long sheets, a recirculation path, associated with the paper path, is used to allow the sheet to re-enter the paper path: in this way, one side of the sheet is scanned with one scan head, and then the other side is scanned with the other scan head.

Image scanning apparatus that scans both sides of an input sheet

A customer replaceable unit (CRU) assembly for mounting in a sheet handling machine is disclosed and includes (a) a CRU frame having a frame size for fitting into a mounting portion within the sheet handling machine; (b) a first roller assembled rotatably to the CRU frame; (c) a second roller assembled rotatably to the CRU frame and for resilient contact with the first roller to form a sheet handling nip; and (d) a spacer and anti-mounting assembly including (i) a holding feature formed in the CRU frame and (ii) a removable member mounted in the holding feature for temporarily preventing mounting of the CRU frame into the mounting portion within the sheet handling machine, and for temporarily spacing the second roller out of resilient contact with the first roller so as to prevent roller flat spots, operating roller noise, and premature roller failure.

An improved device and method for providing increased latitude of paper handling tires includes at least three elastomeric materials mounted on a shaft and divided into three or more torus-shaped sections of varied width. Combinations of EPDM, Silicone and Isoprene are examples of materials that can be used to make the paper handling tires.
