A system to combine the transfer and fixing xerographic steps of a xerographic printer into one, as well as to eliminate the need for an electrical field for transfer. The image is transfixed directly from a photoconductor to the paper or other suitable substrate. Appropriate pressure is applied during this step to cold-pressure fix the toner on the paper, taking into account the type of substrate and type of toner. The cold pressure transfix can be done either directly from a photoreceptor, without an intermediate transfer belt (ITB), eliminating all electrostatic transfer subsystems and a fusing operation. Alternatively, for engines with an intermediate transfer belt (ITB), the cold pressure transfix could replace a needed second transfer and fuser system.

Fixing systems, printing apparatuses and methods for fixing marking material to a substrate are provided. An exemplary embodiment of the fixing systems includes a pre-heating device for pre-heating a substrate and marking material disposed on a surface of the substrate; a fixing device disposed downstream from the pre-heating device, the fixing device including fixing members which oppose each other and form a fixing nip; and a first thermal energy source for heating at least one of the fixing members; wherein the fixing members apply pressure and thermal energy to the pre-heated substrate and marking material at the fixing nip to fix the toner to the substrate; and a conditioning device positioned (a) upstream from the pre-heating device, (b) between the pre-heating device and the fixing device, or (c) downstream from the fixing device. The conditioning device includes conditioning members which oppose each other and form a conditioning nip. The conditioning device does not include a thermal energy source that actively heats the conditioning members.

Fixing systems including image conditioner and image pre-heater and methods of fixing marking material to substrates

A printing apparatus or printing system that uses multiple print engines to form an image on a substrate. The printing apparatus or printing system may be a surface printing system or a reverse printing system. Each of the multiple print engines has at least one color station. The color stations are arranged in the print engines and between the multiple print engines based on whether the printing system is a surface printing system or a reverse printing system to control the order in which colorant is formed on a substrate. Multiple print engines allow for, among other things, a greater color gamut and therefore assists in expansion of the standard color gamut.

Apparatuses useful in printing and methods of fixing marking materials on media in apparatuses useful in printing are provided. An exemplary embodiment of the apparatuses useful in printing includes a first fixing device disposed along a first media path. The first fixing device includes a first fixing member including a first surface and a second fixing member including a second surface which forms a first nip with the first surface. The first fixing device does not include a thermal energy source that actively heats the first surface or the second surface and the first fixing device is adapted to apply pressure to a medium received at the first nip. A second fixing device is disposed along a second media path. The second fixing device includes at least one thermal energy source adapted to supply thermal energy to actively heat the medium at the second fixing device. A controller is configured to selectively route the medium to the first fixing device or to the second fixing device.

Apparatuses useful in printing and methods of fixing marking materials on media

Multi-stage fixing systems for fixing toner to a substrate, printing apparatuses and methods of fixing marking material to a substrate are provided. An exemplary embodiment of the multi-stage fixing systems includes a softening device for softening toner applied to a substrate by a marking device; and a fixing device for fixing the softened toner to the substrate. The fixing device includes a first fixing member including a first surface; a first thermal energy source for actively heating the first surface; and a second fixing member including a second surface, the first surface and the second surface form a fixing nip at which the substrate with softened toner is received. The first fixing member and the second fixing member are operable to apply heat and pressure to the substrate and softened toner received at the fixing nip to fix the toner to the substrate.

Multi-stage fixing systems, printing apparatuses and methods of fixing marking material to substrates

A system for fixing an image on a piece of media is provided. The system has a first enclosure having an image forming section for forming the image on the piece of media and a pressure fixing section that does not include a thermal energy source for fixing the image to the piece of media. The pressure fixing section has a first rotating member, a second rotating member located proximate the first member such that a gap exists between the first member and the second member, the gap being for receiving the piece of media, and a force applying device that applies force to at least one of the first member and the second member to apply pressure to the piece of media such that the image is fixed to the piece of media by the pressure. The apparatus also has a second enclosure having a fixing section that includes a thermal energy source for further fixing the image to the piece of media after the image has been fixed to the media by the pressure fixing section.

An apparatus and method for homogenizing developer allow variations in image quality between marking engines to be reduced. The apparatus includes a developer homogenizer in communication with the marking engines which receives developer from the first marking engine and developer from the second marking engine and combines them. A first portion of the combined developer is returned to the first marking engine for forming images therewith and a second portion of the combined developer is returned to the second marking engine for forming images therewith.

This is a shim cleaning blade for use in a novel cleaning station of an electrophotographic marking system having an a-Si photoconductive surface. The cleaning blade is preferably made from stainless steel but other metals can be used if suitable. The blade has a thickness of about 0.05-0.2 mm, but best results are obtained when using a thickness of about 005-0.1 mm. The cleaning blade contacts the photoconductive surface it is cleaning at an angle of from about 2 to about 40 degrees.

Xerographic imaging modules, xerographic apparatuses including the xerographic imaging modules and methods of making the xerographic imaging modules are disclosed. An embodiment of the xerographic imaging modules includes a photoreceptor roll having a photoconductive surface, a donor roll adjacent the photoreceptor roll for supplying toner to the photoconductive surface, and a toner loading roll adjacent the donor roll for supplying the toner to the donor roll. The toner loading roll includes a core comprised of a foam first material, and a non-porous surface region comprised of the first material. The surface region surrounds the core and forms an outer surface of the toner loading roll.

Xerographic imaging modules, xerographic apparatuses, and methods of making xerographic imaging modules

A xerographic marking device includes an intermediate transfer unit, a media transport path and at least one two-color image-on-image (IOI) drum module. Each two-color IOI drum module includes in a process order around a photoreceptor: a) a first charging unit; b) a first exposure unit; c) a first development unit; d) a second charging unit; e) a second exposure unit; and f) a second development unit, wherein the intermediate transfer unit receives a first toned image and a second toned image from the photoreceptor in a single transfer and transfers those toner images to print media to produce a toned image on print media. In various embodiments, specific color pairings are provided.

An apparatus for loading one or more donor rolls of a developer unit, comprising a developer housing having a reservoir for a developer material, a rotatable first donor roll that delivers the toner onto a moving photoconductive member, a trim roll that receives developer material from the reservoir and delivers the developer material to a first magnetic brush roller that delivers toner to the first donor roll, and a rotatable second magnetic brush roll that receives the developer material from the first magnetic brush roll and delivers the toner to the first donor roll. The apparatus may further comprise a rotatable second donor roll that receives the toner from the second magnetic brush roll and delivers the toner onto the photoconductive member, and a rotatable third magnetic brush roll that receives the developer material from the second magnetic brush roll and delivers the toner to the second donor roll. The apparatus may further comprise a trim blade for trimming excess developer material from the trim roll.
