A heat transfer fluid which maintains a low hydrogen permeation rate at temperatures of 350.degree.-400.degree. c. or higher and its pumpability at temperatures of -10.degree. C. or lower is provided. The fluid is especially useful in solar energy collection applications. A method of reducing fluid impurities from polyphenyls is also disclosed.

A new class of monoepoxyethylenecyclohexyl compounds useful as acid scavengers and corrosion inhibitors in functional fluid compositions.

Novel monoepoxy compounds as acid scavengers in functional fluids

Improved hydraulic fluids contain at least one compound represented by the structure: ##STR1## where Q.sub.1 is --0--R.sub.1 or ##STR2## Q.sub.2 is --O--R.sub.4 or ##STR3## Q.sub.3 is --O--R.sub.7 or ##STR4## and Q.sub.4 is --O--R.sub.10 or ##STR5## R is selected from the group consisting of non-phenolic ether residue, non-phenolic thioether residue, non-phenolic polyether residue, linear alkyl, branched alkyl, cyclic alkyl, substituted cyclic alkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl and non-phenolic alkyl-aryl, containing from 1 to 16 carbon atoms; provided that the --O--R--O-- portion of the structure is non-phenolic; R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, R.sub.10, R.sub.11 and R.sub.12 are individually selected from the group consisting of linear alkyl, branched alkyl, cyclic alkyl, non-phenolic alkylaryl or substituted cyclic alkyl, containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and can be the same or different in any combination; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 together can form a heterocyclic ring optionally interrupted by hetero atoms selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen; R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 together can form a heterocyclic ring optionally interrupted by hetero atoms selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen; R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 together can form a heterocyclic ring optionally interrupted by hetero atoms selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen; R.sub.11 and R.sub.12 together can form a heterocyclic ring optionally interrupted by hetero atoms selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen.

Functional fluid compositions comprising a major amount of a base stock material which is an ester or amide of an acid phosphorus, a di- or tricarboxylic acid ester, an ester of a polyhydric compound or mixtures thereof, optionally minor amounts of other base stock materials or base stock modifiers such as viscosity index improvers, cavitation damage inhibitors, and lubricity agents, and an additive amount of an acid scavenger and corrosion inhibitor which is a monoepoxy substituted cyclohexane such as C.sub.1-4 alkyl-3,4-epoxycyclohexane. The compositions are particularly useful as aircraft hydraulic fluids.

Chemical compounds

Benzyl aryl ethers are useful solvents for chromogenic materials in preparing pressure-sensitive record material wherein a colorless or substantially colorless chromogen is reacted in the presence of a benzyl aryl ether solvent with an acidic sensitizing material to form a colored mark in a pattern determined by the application of localized pressure to the record material. The benzyl aryl ether solvents are heat stable and give particularly fast color development on phenolic resin coated papers.

Functional fluid compositions comprising a major amount of a base stock material which is an ester or amide of an acid phosphorus, a di- or tricarboxylic acid ester, an ester of a polyhydric compound or mixtures thereof, optionally minor amounts of other base stock materials or base stock modifiers such as viscosity index improvers, cavitation damage inhibitors, and lubricity agents, and an additive amount of an acid scavenger and corrosion inhibitor which is a monoepoxy norbornyl carboxylate such as C.sub.1.sub.-4 alkyl-5,6-epoxynorbornane carboxylate. The compositions are particularly useful as aircraft hydraulic fluids.
