A process for producing chlorine and iron oxide from iron chloride (which may be generated as a by-product of the direct chlorination of titaniferous ores) comprises the steps of converting ferrous chloride to ferric chloride by reaction with chlorine, separating the solids from the gaseous products, reacting the gaseous ferric chloride with oxygen, condensing unreacted ferric chloride onto iron oxide particles, separating the gaseous products from the iron oxide particles and recycling the iron oxide particles to the oxidation or condensation step.

An improved kiln for the calcination of a powder comprises a directly heated rotary kiln in which at least a part of the inner circumferential wall is equipped with a plurality of protrusions. The protrusions are shaped so that the powder is substantially not lifted during operation of the kiln. In a preferred embodiment the protrusions have the shape of a triangular prism and are positioned within the kiln so as to pass through the powder in the manner of a plough. Preferably the top face of the prism is an isosceles triangle in which the equal angles are greater than the angle of repose of the powder for which the kiln is designed.

Kiln for calcination of a powder

A rotating impeller for stirring liquids contained in tanks. Strip-like blades of simple form radiate from a central hub, in swept-back configuration relative to the direction of rotation. The blades are angled relative to the hub so as to exert a forward and downward force upon the liquid as the impeller rotates, and the blade curvature is such that the area projected upon the liquid by the solid structure of the rotating blade is less than the corresponding area that would be projected by an otherwise similar blade in which imaginary straight lines connected all adjacent vertices, and any void areas lying within the boundaries of those imaginary lines had been filled in. The preferred arrangement of the blades is such that when the impeller is arranged with its axis vertical, curvature of each blade along its length is such that it extends away from the hub in a diminishing downward curve, reaches a lowest point, and then rises again before the blade tip is reached. In cross-section each blade will typically be straight and parallel-sided, but may also be slightly curved, of aerofoil section, etc.

Impellers

Shaped articles, especially ones containing a plurality of fine through passages, are made from a composition containing a refractory particulate material by extrusion, cutting the extrudate, while vertically hanging or suspending into lengths while in the green deformable state by a high velocity water jet, and then calcining to bind the refractory particles together. Depending on the nature of the refractory material, the articles are of use as catalyst supports or precursors, adsorbents, or absorbents. The extrudate is extruded horizontally and allowed to sag into a gap between the extrusion die and a transport device, which is driven positively to maintain the degree of sag within predetermined limits, and the frequency of cutting depends on the rate of movement of the transport device.

Method of making refractory shaped articles by cutting vertically

A method of spinning fibres from a liquid, particularly a liquid urea formaldehyde resin, which comprises the step of supplying the liquid to at least one rotating annular reservoir having an outwardly extending upper and/or lower weir, and causing the liquid to flow outwardly over the said weir(s) and to be spun outwardly therefrom in the form of fibres by centrifugal force.

An electrochemical cell is disclosed which includes a particulate electrode and a current conductor for feeding current to the particles of the particulate electrode, and means for flowing a fluid medium upwardly through the said particulate electrode, wherein a wall which forms part of a compartment defining the area occupied by the particulate electrode is provided with stabilizing means positioned so as to provide generally unidirectional flow channels which, when the electrochemical cell is in use, encourage vertical flow, and discourage bulk lateral movement, of said particles in the region of the said wall. There is also disclosed an electrochemical process in which there is used a particulate electrode located in an electrochemical cell or a compartment of an electrochemical cell, and in which a fluid is supplied to the particulate electrode so as to cause the majority of the particles which constitute the particulate electrode to undergo systematic circulatory movement within the cell or the compartment of a cell, wherein the motion of the particles is controlled at least in part by the provision of stabilizing means on a wall defining part of the area occupied by the particulate electrode, the stabilizing means being shaped and positioned so as to provide generally unidirectional flow channels which encourage vertical flow and discourage bulk lateral movement of the particles in the region of the said wall.
