Communicating with a logical partition of a computing system based on a separate logical partition in which each of one or more computing systems includes a central electronics complex (CEC) capable of concurrently operating multiple logical partitions, each CEC includes a support element (SE), in which the SE includes access to memory locations of each of the multiple logical partitions within memory of the CEC, and the SE has a mapping of the memory locations for each of the multiple logical partitions. A request to retrieve data from the memory of a logical partition with an operational condition is detected. The request is transferred to an SE interface which enables remote access to the logical partition with the operational condition, and in response to receiving the data, the data that includes the operations status from the memory location of the logical partition is displayed.

A method for swapping peer-to-peer remote copy (PPRC) secondary device definitions from a subchannel set other than zero to subchannel set zero by the utilization of control block-field manipulation includes identifying a PPRC primary and secondary device pair, wherein a PPRC primary device definition resides at subchannel set zero and the PPRC secondary device definition resides at a subchannel set other than subchannel set zero; within operating system definitions of the PPRC pair, exchanging physical information associated with the PPRC primary and secondary devices, including pathing, node descriptor, device number, and a field cross referencing device numbers of the PPRC pair; and within channel subsystem definitions of the PPRC primary and secondary devices, via a SwapSubchannel instruction, exchanging physical information, including path and control unit information while retaining a subchannel identifier, a subchannel set identifier, and a subchannel interruption parameter pointing to the operating system definition of the device.

The method comprises identifying a PPRC primary and secondary device, wherein the PPRC primary device definitions reside at subchannel set zero and the PPRC secondary device definitions reside at a subchannel set other than subchannel set zero, initiating a PPRC device definition substitution operation to substitute the PPRC primary device definitions within the subchannel set where the PPRC secondary device definition resides and substitute the PPRC secondary device definitions within the subchannel set where the PPRC primary device definitions resides, storing the control block information for each PPRC device whose device definitions are to be substituted, and storing the PPRC primary device definitions within the subchannel set where the PPRC secondary device definition resides and storing the PPRC secondary device definitions within subchannel set zero.

Methods and computer program products for swapping synchronous replication secondaries from a subchannel set other than zero to subchannel set zero using dynamic I/O

Exemplary embodiments of the present invention define PPRC devices within subchannel sets other than subchannel set zero. Further, for all PPRC paired n devices an additional N/2 PPRC primary device numbers and subchannels are provided within subchannel set zero by moving PPRC secondary devices to any subchannel set other than subchannel set zero.

Methods and computer program products for defining synchronous replication devices in a subchannel set other than subchannel set zero

An I/O request time limit value is set in a request-based, device-based, data-set-based, or workload-based time limit field, for transactions performing I/O operations to I/O devices in a data processing system. A scan routine compares the total time for the I/O request (including waiting time and retry time) against the appropriate time limit(s), and terminates the I/O request if the time limit is exceeded. If an active I/O request is interrupted as a result of an I/O error, retry is prohibited if the total I/O request time (including retry time) exceeds the appropriate time limit, or is within a threshold value of the appropriate time limit.
