Methods and systems for determining density or density gradient of molten foamed glass in a glass melter, an apparatus downstream of a glass melter, or both. A molten foamed glass is generated having molten glass and bubbles entrained therein and/or a layer of glass foam on a top surface thereof in a melter. At least a portion of the molten foamed glass is transferred into an apparatus positioned downstream of the melter, and the density or density gradient of the molten foamed glass in the melter or downstream apparatus is determined as a function of distance from a structural feature of the melter or downstream apparatus, or both, using one or more electromagnetic (EM) wave-based sensors.

A melter apparatus includes a floor, a ceiling, and a wall connecting the floor and ceiling at a perimeter of the floor and ceiling, a melting zone being defined by the floor, ceiling and wall, the melting zone having a feed inlet and a molten glass outlet positioned at opposing ends of the melting zone. Melter apparatus include an exit end having a melter exit structure for discharging turbulent molten glass formed by one or more submerged combustion burners, the melter exit structure fluidly and mechanically connecting the melter vessel to a molten glass conditioning channel. The melter exit structure includes a fluid-cooled transition channel configured to form a frozen glass layer or highly viscous glass layer, or combination thereof, on inner surfaces of the fluid-cooled transition channel and thus protect the melter exit structure from mechanical energy imparted from the melter vessel to the melter exit structure.

Channel apparatus for use with submerged combustion systems and methods of use to produce glass. One channel apparatus includes a flow channel defined by a floor, a roof, and a wall structure connecting the floor and roof, the flow channel divided into sections by a series of skimmers. Channel apparatus include both high and low momentum combustion burners, with one or more high momentum combustion burners positioned immediately upstream of each skimmer in either the roof or sidewall structure, or both, and one or more low momentum combustion burners positioned immediately downstream of each skimmer in either the roof, the sidewall structure, or both, and positioned to transfer heat to the molten mass of glass without substantial interference from foamed material. Certain embodiments include increased height of glass-contact refractory, in particular immediately upstream of the skimmers.

A method of forming a gas impermeable joint in a fluid system includes: providing a tube having a metallic barrier layer disposed between an inner plastic layer and an outer plastic layer; forcing at least one of the inner plastic layer and the outer plastic layer into contact with a plastic surface of a component; and welding the at least one of the inner plastic layer and the outer plastic layer with the plastic surface to form the gas impermeable joint. The welding may include: spin welding, hot plate welding, vibration welding, and ultrasonic welding. The metallic barrier layer extends substantially to the component, thus improving the gas impermeability of the joint between the tube and the component.

A conductive tubular connector insert for use in a fuel conveying system to couple a first conductive polymeric tubular member to a second conductive polymeric tubular member such that electrical conductivity is insured in the system as described. The conductive tubular connector comprises: a first end having a first annular margin; a second end having a second annular margin; a first tubular body section having a first circumference; a second tubular body section having a second circumference; and an annular rib, wherein the first tubular body section is adjacent the first end and extends toward the annular rib along a longitudinal axis, and the second tubular body section extends from the annular rib toward the second end where, at a point intermediate the circumferential rib and the second end, the second tubular body section tapers radially inward forming a tapered surface terminating in a second annular margin adjacent the second end of the second tubular body section, the configuration of the conductive connector insert being such that, upon being implanted into an end of the first polymeric tubular member, the end of the first polymeric tubular structure forms a bead around the annular rib to secure the conductive connector insert therein leaving a portion of the second tubular body section extending out of the end of the first polymeric tubular member, wherein the end of the first polymeric tubular structure having the second tubular body section extending therefrom is inserted into an end of a second polymeric tubular member such that the conductive connector insert is in conductive contact with the conductive inner surface of the first polymeric tubular member and the conductive inner surface of the second polymeric tubular member to maintain conductive continuity therein.

A product size grading system comprises a roller bed having a plurality of rotary shafts wherein each shaft supports product sizing roller members. A motorized transmission is coupled to the plurality of rotary shafts and drives the rotary shafts in a uniform direction wherein each shaft in the roller bed rotates at a different speed. The speeds of the rotary shafts become progressively faster from the input end of the roller bed to its output end. The roller members comprise alternating conveyor disks and nubbin rollers threaded onto each of the rotary shafts. The nubbin rollers are relatively thick disks having a substantially polygonal cross section with flexible nubbins or vanes projecting radially outwardly therefrom. Each nubbin roller is sandwiched by a pair of thin conveyor disks which are also generally polygonal in shape, but have rounded crown portions between their flat portions. The combination of the nubbin rollers and the conveyor disks form product sizing pockets. Undersized product falls into these pockets and is dropped below the roller bed.
