A power management system includes a power infrastructure having power infrastructure components that couple computing devices to power source(s), and a power management subsystem coupled to the computing devices. The power management subsystem identifies power requirement information for each of the computing devices and power transmission limitation information for the power infrastructure components, and determines a power infrastructure architecture that identifies how the power infrastructure components couple the computing devices to the power source(s). The power management subsystem then uses the power requirement information, the power transmission limitation information, and the power infrastructure architecture to generate and provide a respective input current limit to each of the computing devices. Each respective input current limit is configured to maximize performance of the respective computing device for which it was generated while ensuring availability of the power infrastructure in the event of an unavailability of a subset of the power infrastructure components.

Power management system

An information handling system polls telemetry data from sensors associated with a central processing unit, and determines current offsets for each one of the sensors based on the telemetry data. The system may also determine a domain current offset associated with a calibration domain, determine a voltage regulator offset based on the domain current offset, and adjust power provided by the voltage regulator to the central processing unit based on the voltage regulator offset.

Adaptive current offset calibration adjustment

An information handling system includes a management controller that may determine average power consumption of a processor, and determine average power measurement at a power supply unit. If the average power consumption of the processor does not match the average power measurement at the power supply unit, then the system may calibrate the average power consumption of the processor to match the average power measurement at the power supply unit.

An information handling system includes a PSU current level combiner, a current level indication splitter, and a load element. The PSU current level combiner receives a PSU current level indication from each of a plurality of PSUs, and provides a system current level indication that indicates a total amount of current supplied by the PSUs. Each PSU current level indication is a current signal and wherein a current level of each PSU current level indication is proportional to the amount of current supplied by the associated PSU. The system current level indication is a current signal. A current level of the system current level indication is proportional to the total amount of current. The system current level indication splitter receives the system current level indication, and provides copies of the system current level indication. The load element receives a copy of the system current level indication, and modifies a behavior of the first load element based on the copy of the system current level indication.

Method and apparatus to distribute current indicator to multiple end-points

An information handling system includes resistive short detection circuitry that measures a first amount of power provided by a power supply system, and measures a second amount of power drawn by components. The resistive short detection circuitry compares the first amount of power with the second amount of power. In response to first amount of power being greater than the second amount of power, the resistive short detection circuitry determines that a short exists within the information handling system.

System and method for diagnosing resistive shorts in an information handling system

A power management system includes a first power grid coupled to a first circuit breaker, and a first power distribution unit coupled to the first circuit breaker. A server device includes server components, and at least one first power supply unit coupled to the first power distribution unit. A power management subsystem in the server device is coupled to the server components and the at least one first power supply unit. The power management subsystem monitors a first input current draw of each first power supply unit, and determines whether the first input current draw exceeds a first input current limit that is based on the first circuit breaker. In response the first input current draw exceeding the first input current limit, the power management subsystem throttles the server components to reduce the first input current draw below the first input current limit.

A system for setting a power cap state is disclosed. The system includes a plurality of power monitor sensors generating power monitor sensor data and a plurality of thermal monitor sensors generating thermal monitor sensor data. A controller has a plurality of inputs configured to receive the power monitor sensor data and the thermal monitor sensor data, to assign a priority to one of two or more power cap states and to generate a control signal. A power limiting circuit coupled to the controller is configured to receive the control signal and to modify one or more power settings.

System and method to maintain optimal system performance while adhering to competing power cap policies

An information handling system includes a power supply and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The power supply includes an input power monitor module and a communication interface. The input power monitor module is configured to detect a total harmonic distortion (THD) on a power input to the power supply, to determine that the THD is greater than a THD threshold, and to provide an indication that the THD is greater than the THD threshold on the communication interface. The BMC is coupled to the communication interface, and is configured to receive the first indication and to enter an item into a log of the information handling system in response to receiving the indication.

System and method for using input power line telemetry in an information handling system

An information handling system includes a processor, a graphics processing unit (GPU), and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The BMC includes a power ratio table with a plurality of entries, each correlating a workload with a power ratio of a power level of the processor when the particular workload is instantiated on the information handing system to a power level of the GPU when the particular workload is instantiated on the information handling system. The BMC determines that the power ratio table includes an entry associated with a workload instantiated on the information handling system, determines that a total power level of the information handling system is greater than a power level threshold, and throttles a power level of the processor and a power level of the GPU based upon a power ratio of the entry in response to determining that the total power level is greater than the power level threshold.

System and method for optimizing hardware resources for optimal workload performance

A system includes a power distribution unit and power manager circuitry. The power manager circuitry to receive a first load profile of a first information handling system, a second load profile of a second information handling system, and a third load profile of a third information handling system. The load profiles are based on power telemetry of the associated server. The power manager circuitry creates an aggregate load profile based on the first, second, and third load profiles, and determines whether the aggregate load profile exceeds a maximum load of the power distribution unit. If the aggregate load profile exceeds the maximum load of the power distribution unit, the power manager circuitry provides an optimal set of power recovery delays for a first, second, and third information handling system and also provides a power supply load limit exceeded warning message.

System and method for monitoring a maximum load based on an aggregate load profile of a system

An information handling system includes a power assist unit (PAU) and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The PAU is coupled to a power rail and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives a current level indication indicating a current provided to a load of the information handling system, directs the converter to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail when the current level indication is greater than a threshold level, directs the converter charge the power storage element from the power rail when the current level indication is greater than the threshold level, and provides a charge level indication that indicates an amount of charge on the power storage unit. The BMC receives the charge level indication, and sets a peak power limit for the information handling system based on the charge level indication.

Method and apparatus to provide platform power peak limiting based on charge of power assist unit

An information handling system includes a current detector module and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The current detector module is configured to detect current slew-rate for an element of the information handling system, to determine that the current slew-rate is greater than a current slew-rate threshold, and to provide an indication that the current slew-rate is greater than the current slew-rate threshold on a communication interface. The BMC may enter an item into a log of the information handling system in response to receiving an indication.

System and method for using current slew-rate telemetry in an information handling system

An information handling system (IHS) includes a power supply unit (PSU) and a power assist unit (PAU). The PSU provides power to a power rail at a first voltage level when he IHS is in a first platform state, and at a second voltage level when the IHS is in a second platform state. The PAU includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and to the power rail, and a controller. The controller determines whether the IHS is operating in the first or second platform state, directs the converter to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail at the first voltage level when the information handling system is in the first platform state, and to direct the converter to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail at the second voltage level when the information handling system is in the second platform state.

Method and apparatus to provide dynamic regulation of power assist unit output based on active profile

An information handling system includes a power supply unit (PSU) and a power assist unit (PAU). The PSU provides a power rail to power a load, and a constant current indication that indicates whether the power supply unit is operating in a constant current mode. The PAU is coupled to the power rail, and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and to the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives an enable signal when the constant current indication indicates that the first power supply unit is operating in the constant current mode, and in response, the controller directs the converter to convert a voltage from the power storage element and to a current to the power rail to meet an additional demand of the load for power. When the controller does not receive the enable signal, the controller directs the converter to charge the power storage element from the power rail.
