Magnetic separators are used for treating silicon-containing materials from chlorosilane reactors to remove magnetically influenced components in the silicon-containing materials. The removal of such impurities allows for enhanced reactivity of the silicon-containing materials in processes wherein the silicon-containing materials are raw materials for the production of silicon based compounds, such as, for example, basic alkylhalosilanes such as dimethyldichlorosilane, methyldichlorosilane, and other chlorosilanes such as trichlorosilane, which chlorosilanes are useful in the preparation of valuable silicon-containing products.

Magnetic separation for silicon-containing materials

A method for recovering particulate silicon essentially free of silicon containing compounds from a by-product stream containing metal salts and high-boiling silicon containing compounds having a boiling point higher than the sublimation temperature of the metal salts. The method comprises first separating the particulate silicon and other solids from the by-product stream by a method such as filtration. The particulates are then washed with a solvent having a boiling point lower than the sublimation temperature of the metal salt, thereby separating residual high-boiling silicon containing compound from the particulate silicon and other solids. The particulate silicon and other solids are then recovered in a dried form, essentially free of silicon containing compounds, by spray drying at a temperature lower than the sublimation temperature of the metal salt.

Method for recovering particulate silicon from a by-product stream

A method for grinding silicon metalloid comprising grinding silicon metalloid in the presence of an effective amount of a grinding aid selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids comprising at least 8 carbon atoms, alkali metal salts of carboxylic acids comprising at least 8 carbon atoms, and polydiorganosiloxanes.

What is disclosed is a process for the rearrangement of cylcoorganopolysilazanes to cycloorganotrisilazanes using quaternary ammonium halides as a catalyst. The quaternary ammonium halide has the formula R.sup.i.sub.4 NX where at least one R.sup.i is a group containing greater than 11 carbon atoms and X is a halogen atom. The rearrangement process is ran either as a batch or a continuous distillation procedure.

Preparation of cycloorganotrisilazanes

A smoking pipe having a rectangular, metal bowl with a cylindrical bore within which is received an insert having at opposite ends concavities of differing volumes such that either a small or a large bowl cavity is provided for receipt of smoking material. The opposite end or bottom of the bore includes a threaded member forming a removable bottom to the bore for cleaning purposes. The outer end of the stem includes a soft material annulus with beveled outer end portions. Immediately above the stem, a shallow opening is formed in the side wall of the bowl for releasably holding the end of a hollow container for smoking materials. A cover is pivotally located over the open bowl top.

Smoking apparatus

There is provided a cigarette holder having the overall appearance of a key, such as an ignition key for an automobile, for example, which is manipulated by the fingers to grip a cigarette for use during smoking. The key-shaped cigarette holder includes a clip at the end opposite the cigarette gripping part which is simultaneously operated for selective connection and removal from a key ring.
