In a method of processing data in a communication device operating in a heterogeneous communication network, data is transferred between a first communication interface within the communication device and an upper protocol layer via a first abstraction layer (AL) processing unit. The first AL processing unit is dedicated to the first communication interface. Additionally, data is transferred between the first AL processing unit and a second AL processing unit within the communication device via an interface between the first AL processing unit and the second AL processing unit. The first AL processing unit is dedicated to a second communication interface within the communication device.

Multiple abstraction layers within a communication device

A device including a first node configured to communicate, over a first connection, with a second node and a third node in a network. The first node includes a first network layer associated with a first communication domain. The first communication domain corresponds to the first connection. A second network layer is associated with the first communication domain and a second communication domain. The first communication domain and the second communication domain are different. The first network layer is configured to receive, from the second node, a data packet to be relayed to the third node, in a first mode, forward the data packet to the third node, and in a second mode, selectively provide the data packet to the second network layer. The second network layer is configured to, in the second mode, forward the data packet to the third node.

A message is received at a communication interface device coupled to a first media type. A second layer (e.g., a dynamic link layer (DLL)) on the communication interface device communicates with an abstraction layer (AL) regarding relaying of the message. The AL determines whether another communication interface device should relay the message via a second media type. When the AL determines that another communication interface device cannot or should not relay the message, the communication interface device relays the message using relaying functionality provided by the second layer (e.g., the DLL). When the AL determines that another communication interface device should relay the message, the AL forwards the message to the other the communication interface device for relaying via the second media type.

Relaying messages in a heterogeneous network

A first node including a physical layer device, a first transceiver and a second transceiver. The first transceiver includes a first analog front end connected to a first transmission line. The first analog front end is configured to transfer first data between the physical layer device and a second node via the first transmission line. The second transceiver includes a second analog front end connected to a second transmission line. The second analog front end is configured to transfer second data between the physical layer device and a third node via the second transmission line. A first type of the second transmission line is different than a second type of the first transmission line. The first node is configured to perform as a repeater using data repeating functions at a link layer control level.

The present disclosure includes systems and techniques relating to communications between an electric vehicle and a charging station. In some implementations, a system includes a charging station, a dual signaling path to connect the charging station with an electric vehicle to charge the electric vehicle from the charging station, and processing electronics configured to communicate information to the electric vehicle using the dual signaling path, wherein the dual signaling path comprises a first path to support charging of the electric vehicle and a second path to support receiving control data from the electric vehicle, and wherein the processing electronics are configured to selectively use the first path or the second path in communicating the information to the electric vehicle.
